easiest way to get square door lock cylinders (other than $400 ssp set?)

Hey folks,

I would like to key my door cylinders to match my ignition lock (which on a different note I will match to my 89 bronco 1 key 2 cars )

I know I need door lock cylinders that take the square key....but....where else can I find these cylinders other than an SSP car?? I want them bad but not $400 bad...

I also would like to have a separate key for the glovebox and trunk....I just want one key to open the car and start it.

Are there any other cars, crown vics, etc, that take the square key? How about aftermarket?

Oh yeah, I want either the black or 'split' finish...no chrome...

On my bronco I bought two new lock cylinders for the doors from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard and to my delight they came with a square key

Take your current locks and ignition switch out and take them to a locksmith and have them rekey both to be the same.
I had to do that with a truck I had because I replaced the ignition switch but wanted the keys all the same.
It cost me $27 to rekey one lock.

I have had several locks rekeyed before and it is well worth the $$$....but they told me when doing the bronco locks the key offset had to be the same.....

OK so I can just get lock cylinders for a vic (I assume 88-91???)?
Isn't this the 'panther' platform? Can you verify what year vic lock cylinders will work? Aren't they chrome though?

Yes, you can get the door lock cylinders off of an box-body Crown Vic or off some other late-'70s to late-'80s Ford vehicles (including some trucks and vans). Take your ignition key to a boneyard and try it in different Ford locks. If it fits into the cylinder, take the locks and have them re-keyed to match your ignition. You'll probably need to swap the arms from the back of your current locks to the back of the new ones, so it'll fit the Mustang. If you want the locks in black, be prepared to paint them yourself.

The real problem is if you want to change the trunk lock too. The trunk locks for the Mustangs were very specific to the car, and I don't think you can just change out the cylinder. It's possible you could get the trunk lock off of a pre-'92, police Crown Vic, and have it re-keyed, but I don't know if it'll fit the 'Stang. If you can live with having a separate key for the trunk, you're all set.

There is a reason that those single-key lock sets command such high prices. They're rare, and not easily reproduced.

I can live with a different trunk lock...

Yes I can certainly live with a different trunk lock, in fact I prefer it. I would like to be able to lock my trunk and glovebox and have my car be able to be valet'd or shipped with no access to the trunk....but it is imperative that the door and ignition work with one key. I will probably leave the trunk key in the trunk in my gear bag, and take it when I want; I rarely use the trunk key at all, 99% of the time I use the button in the glovebox.

Painting an item like this scares me as it could easily scratch up with misuse of the key. I think my current locks are actually anodized or black chromed; I am not sure exactly what that factory finish is....

I have spent alot of money on my Mustang but I can't imagine dropping that kind of coin on locks....$200, $250....maybe.

As an alternative I might check into new locks and see what they cost. I love going to the boneyard but my wife hates when I am gone for hours!!!

Will all box vics need the arm changed on the lock? Are there any that will just
drop in? Is it easy to change the arm?
