I have 351 windsor with a edelbrock carb and intake, My question is >> My car will be at a high idle one minute when i start it when warm, then next time its normal, Then when im driving it and come to a light it takes awhile for the idle to come down. Can somebody please help this has really made it not very fun to drive , especially when i start it up in front of people and its idle is high and i put it in gear and it bangs into reverse.

With the engine warmed up and the idle is high in park (you didn't specify how high) and you don't touch anything, does it go down eventually? Or do you have to "blip" the throttle to get it to come down?

What if you physically force the linkage by hand or lift the pedal with your foot, will the idle come down?

Disconnect the throttle linkage at the carb and start the car. Rev it up and down in neutral a couple of times, letting the carb snap back to idle by itself. Does it work normally?

If you have a choke, disconnect it and leave the choke wide open. Not just the choke plate, but the linkage that raises the idle should be disabled. Drive it like that for a bit. Any change?

Ok this is what happened I drove it down road then turned around came back to house and as i slowed to enter driveway it was running fast,I opened up hood and took off linkage and no difference , meanwhile car is idling at 1,800rpm , So i reattached linkage and shut car off , Then immediatly without touching gas restarted it,It was idling back to normal, Seems like after i drive it and go tostop car is still racing , ?Any ideas ?? Please help its kinda dangerous driving it,And you stangers dont want to red about a classic getting wrecked do ya??

Let me understand this correctly. When you took off the linkage, did you rev it up and down manually, and the idle still stayed high?

The idle only goes back down after you have shut the car off, then start it back up? Or is there another way to get the idle to come down?

check to make sure that the linkage is not hanging up on something, i've had that probem before. another thing i would check is the throttle return spring. does your carb havea choke? electric or mechanical?

wire the choke open and see what happens, make sure the linkage is in the correct position too.

Mechanical advance in the distributor getting stuck? Is the vacuum advance on the wrong port perhaps?
