Hey guys just wondering how good /bad these heads are. I hear alot of people saying edelbrocks a good company but everyone seems to praise AFR heads. Over this winter I would like to supercharge it or get some better flowing heads. Eventually I am going to supercharge this car either way.

Now it has the old style Edelbrock performers on it. How much better do the Afr 165's flow if any. Is it worth doing a valve job to these heads or just throwing on a charger as it sits. My mods are in my sig.

I ran them on my car before retrofitting EFI...they did well with my combo. AFR 165's flow marginally better than the Eddy's. But, if you give them a 3 angle valve job, they should be fine for throwing on the blower. That's what I intend to do with my car in the not too distant future...clean up my Eddy's and throw them on with the S-trim...w/about 10-12psi I'm hoping for 400 rwhp then comes the meth/water injection!

No one else, I am trying to decide if I should get new heads or not. I was doing research about the AFR's and saw alot of people like the twisted wedge heads. The heads come withthe optional o rings. Is it worthwhile to get the better flowing twisted wedge heads for the money, or just supercharge with my current combo.

Eddy small valve new style heads on mine and I could not be happier with the output of my little N/A 306. With a comp XE cam, and untouched typhoon intake the car laid down numbers I'd put against any H/C/I combo on a low compression 302/306. See my sig for a pic of my dyno sheet.

ok, heres the deal with the performer heads: they are $400 CHEAPER than AFRs. you can get edlebrock perfomer heads, sometimes new, for 899-949, and the afrs are 1325. this isnt even an apples to apples compairson.

now, to your question: they are a wondeful head. they will flow nicely on any 302-347 setup. out of the box, the finish on them is very nice. yes, there are heads that will flow better, but when you save that money and put it toward something probably more useful, you will notice the gains there.

You have to watch piston/valve clearance with twisted wedge heads because the valves are positioned at a different angle(from what I hear)
If it was me, I would go with Canfield heads because IMO they flow just as good, if not better than AFR's of the same runner cc

Keep the Edelbrocks. If you have a bunch of miles on the heads you should consider a valve job and new springs.

FWIW: Edelbrock respond very well to porting the exhaust side. Intakes are pretty good as is.

Freshen up the heads, shape up the exhaust ports and put that S/C on. You will haul a$$.

my engine builder says the aluminum canfields are made out of is not as hard as the aluminum that which the eddys and afrs are made out of. apparently they tend not hold the head gasgets as well.

ever wonder why there are so many canfield heads for sale over on corral?

there must be a reason. there not many eddy or afr heads for sale over there

LOL....if you only knew what I recently found out about Canfield, AFR and a few other heads.
Apparently, Canfield supplies the casts for many aftermarket heads, including the AFR's.
I know you're going to want proof of that so give me time and I'll dig it up for ya.

X2:nice:

yep... you should be at over 400 WHP with your future boost!! They are putting down over 450 on ported E7's!! If there is down time in the future.. then pull the heads and have them ported and polished, fresh valve job and flat surface... they will rock!! Looking at a different head that will probably do the same as your Brocks ported.... HHHMMmmmmmm.... something to consider??

Just me..................................

Thanks for the replies guys, alot of good advice. I was doing my research and am going to steer away from the oringed heads. There were a few post of people recomending some good head gaskets, and saying your better off not o ringing so you dont do serious internal damage in the case of running bad mixtures.

Funny you posted that thumper, as I was on your site last night looking to see if you port the eddys as well as the e7s. he heads have only about 8k miles on them at max but I am trying to lay down a good foundation so I can add a blower on for this spring. Right now I am trying to decide on a good suspension setup so I can get some traction. Thanks again for the advice.

I agree with one of most of the statments above, you already have the heads which are good to start with. The difference between the AFR's and Edelbrocks wont be enough to go through all the work it will take to swap them out. Just put a blower or turbo on it and be done with it. :nice:

i would go with the edelbrocks for your application.

i dont think the AFRs would be worth the extra money. since your going to put on a SC which will more than make up the difffernce.
