It's all good 88GT17MA. I don't know enough to really say but solid lifters are just that, solid. The pitfalls of hydrolic lifters (roller or flat) seem to be that they will bleed down or pump up which can either prevent lift or leave the valves hanging open. Your valves won't follow the cam as well due to the lifter having a shock effect. Solids tend to be lighter.

I am running a factory block, cast crank, and I beam rods. Of course I am going to run a SFI balancer and SFI flywheel, and have the assembly balanced and put togeather with ARP fasteners. I don't know if this will be adiquite for 8000rpm though. The reason for the solid roller idea is just to get the best I can. I might just go solid flat. I haven't made my mind up yet. Money is an issue, and I have so much more to buy. My dreams are always bigger than my budget.

If I were smart, I would just do the 347 right, hire TMOSS to do my performer intake, a solid flat cam, get it running right, then a little down the road I can upgrade. The thing is that if I do all what I want to do, I'm looking at needing fuel upgrades, TB upgrades, i can go on.

I just would really like to get it running with at least a solid foundation. I took a ride in my buddy's Z28 tonight, I miss that feeling.

I do agree with Tom that a fully ported Ebrock could make great power and tq and keep the rpm's down in the 6000rpm range. However for max power, and still maintain good tq my choice would be a TFS R, spin it 6800-7000RPM with 10.5:1 or higher compression, 1.75" long tubes. The RPM II or Holley would retain a little more tq down low over the R, but you could always add a 1/2"-1" spacer to the R to increase the runner length if needed.

OR

Even better yet a Vic Jr Spyder Manifold, or I know of another brand CARB/EFI Spyder Manifold, I have the only one out in public that I know off right now;), but could get another. It is KICK ASS, has awesome distribution even over the conventional carb spyder intakes.

I wonder if I hired TMOSS to do my performer intake, and did a custom solid flat tappet cam, it would have me set for a while.

I could have this running in a couple months, but how would it run? 11's possible.

347 10:2 compression.
TFS TW heads w trackheat springs
Custom flat solid cam
Ported Edelbrock Performer intake
70mm TB 76mm MAF
BBK 1 5/8ths LT's into 2.5" O/R H into dumped flows.
255lph f/p, 24# injectors, Kirban AFPR
3.73 gears, full drag suspension, ET Streets.
2700lbs car. TKO 500 trans.

What difference would ported TW's give?
 
The ported performer intake would get you 11's. Your car is light so that would help. This combo would be choking above 6000 rpm I bet.

In my opinion, the best choice is the rpm II, holley or the TFS R. Obviously, tfs R is my choice. Spin it to 6500-7000 and make power. You don't need excessive low end power in a 2700lb street strip car unless thats what you want? If you ported the heads (something my combo is begging for) that'd make a huge difference. Go check out some of the strokers on afm's site with ported TW heads. Rick's car was doing 470rwhp with heavily ported tw heads. Dunno how streetable that car is, but its an example. Its alla matter of your budget and your need for speed :D

Like I said in this thread, I talked to jay allen about which manifold to use, the holley or tfs R and he said use the R hands down. Also depends on your goals and remember, the camshaft is the key.

You can't be serious. I thought you had a clue about putting combos together.

No one would use a Performer, ported or not on that combo at 7,500 rpm. Put a combo together that makes power below 6,500 rpm and any good porter can do a Performer that would kill any one of those intakes.
 
The graph I posted makes peak power BELOW 6,500 rpm Tom. Besides, the point of me posting that graph was to show that just because the intake is "big" doesn't mean it won't make low speed power. Theres more to it than just one part, the camshaft plays a huge role in this equation.

My car will go just a tad over 6500,(my cam's powerband is appx 3200-6400 according to Ed's spec sheet as I asked for mid-high end power) are you telling me i'd pick up by switching to a performer intake that you (or any other good porter) did? I do not believe this for 1 second and even if it were true, how much more money would have to be dumped into the $500 intake? There wouldn't be a fair way to do this test anyway if the camshaft remains constant unless you did a ported performer/custom cam vs bigger manifold/custom cam.
 
Definatly something to consider. That was some nice HP numbers. I e-mailed Thumper to see what he thinks and would charge to port the heads. Just not sure what all to do. Would 24# injectors be able to handle this kind of demand? How will the stock computer be able to handle this? I'm going to try to contact Rick tomorow.

This is just plain confusing. I mean, I have everything else in prespective, but I get so bewildered on what to do with the engine. I want this engine to run, and I don't need to be the fastest car on the earth, but at the same time I don't want to kick myself knowing that I could have at the point I am at now. I don't even know if I want to stay with fuel injection. Fuel injection is just beautifull on a mild combo for the street, but it can be a nightmare for a really agressive setup, unless of course you go all out with tuning equipment. How much is the PMS or tweecer? How good are they? Should I go carbed? So much simpler.

Yeah, I've had more than one guy tell me what won't work before and I've proved em wrong more than once too. Only one way to tell huh?

Last time I checked the adds, good used Performers could be had for $300 and I'm sure you know what I charge.

I belive that the ported performer with a matched custom cam would make more average power down below 4000rpm, but in a race the bigger intake with a matched custom cam would win. In a race, after launch, your always above 4000rpm. Tom has a good rep, I kicked myself for not just having my stocker ported instead of paying what I did for the Performer. If I were staying with a 306, I would definatly stay with the performer and a portjob, but this is a 347 were talking about, on a light car, low end torque won't be that big of an issue.

I work on cars all day for a living. I know how one sensor just being off a little can really send things into a mess.

Lets say I sell all the EFI stuff I have, I'll probally easily have enough to make a mean carbed setup, while all the EFI stuff, I'm going to need at least another grand.

Plus you can set up a plate nitrous kit for a little extra go-go power for cheap :D .
