OK, that is the best description I can gie of the noise my car is making. This of a really old fashioned oven timer. Not the beeping kind, but the buzzing kind. I have replaced the starter motor, and the starter solenoid. The battery has a good charge, I had it hooked up to a charger all day. Happens when I turn the key. She just won't turn over. Any ideas?

On edit: I also checked and verified all of my grounds.

seems like when i have heard that sound, i put in a new starter and it is good to go....

I know you have covered all the basis and I assume that this problem is the reason for replacing all the parts????

Anyways, although the battery has been on the charger all day it might not be good. Have you had it load tested? Places like Advance Auto do it for nothing. Alternately, try to mount another battery and see what happens.

This one has bit me in the past. . . . .

if it sounds like an oven timer, then it's probably the solinoid, and you're not getting enough juice to it. I would have the battery tested or try another battery if you have one lying around.

If it's a very loud screeching noise, and the car's an automatic, it's probably a worn ring-gear and the motor's stopped in a particularly bad spot on the gear.

Try turning the engine over by hand 1/2 turn or so, then try to start it.

Pretty common problem. I've had old falcons that do it a lot.

It's a manual tranny, so that wouldn't be the issue. Thanks anyway.

I am also starting to lean towards a bad battery. The battery is only a month old, however, I have not had it tested. This evening I replaced the battery cables and the solenoid-to-starter cable and still no difference.

To date that means:
New starter
New solenoid
New batt cables
New solenoid-to-starter cable


I do not have an extra battery laying around, but I could always yank the one out of my truck as a test.

How about just jumping batteries with a jumper cable from a known good battery/vehicle? Are you able to check the cells of the battery with a hydrometer for specific gravity? That will tell you if you have a weak or bad cell in the battery in which case no amount of charging is going to help. Hydrometers are pretty cheap at the parts stores.

I am going to try a differet battery today. If that doesn't fix it, I don't know what else to do.

My XE did that too, very very rarely, must have been a couple of teeth missing. I don't see why the same can't happen to a manual car, as it needs teeth for the starter to engage, and I doubt they're any more indestuctible than auto ring gears. It's quite a horrific sound as the starter with no load spins up a storm against what's left of some teeth. Grindy grindy.

The battery was the culprit. It was only putting out 300 amps, but was rated at over 700. Got a replacement battery and she fired right up. Just got to get her fine tuned.
