Efi To Carburator Swap

I have an '89 Mustang GT:
5-Speed Tremec TKO
3.73 gears
302 Block (stock bottom end)
ported E-7 Heads
Ported Cobra intake
BBK 75mm Throttle body
75mm mass air flow meter
24lb injectors
Crane cam
And proabably more stuff I cant think of now...

I am "Old Skool", all my previous race cars have been carburated and yes Chevy's...I have been out of the drag racing scene for about 5 years. Last year I started looking for a project and being in California pretty much all the "classic" cars that make good runners are over priced and hard to come by. I found this '89 and bought it. I have dumped alot of money it seems to the area of air/fuel delivery to the motor, and all I have gotten is a big headache. It seems nothing want to work right, either somethings too big or too small, too old,etc.. I have taken it to several race shops and had everything programmed and it seems that evrything works awesome for a while the it all go to crap. The car has never been consistent, it will run low 11's one time and then the next trip to the track it runs mid 12's... I am sick and tried of dumping money here and there with no results.
My question is.....
What do I need other than a carburator, manifold, and fuel pressure regulator to convert this Pony to a carb? I am DONE messing with this EFI junk, all that junk is going on ebay soon. Please help me!!!!!!!I think I need a special regulator also to lower the fuel pressure from 35 psi or so down to 5-6.Thanks in advance

 why would you want to do that? ruin a good EFI car.. may not run completely straight as a arrow.. but your better off buying a 85 and down thats stock carb.. you would get more for the car u have now than you would pay for a 85 so you could use the excess to pay for extra parts

Because carburetors are less headaches for someone used to them, and it is cheaper to "up" the hp with them.

And here is a nice little article on everything you need for the swap.

Not to try and stir trouble but first off I don't fully agree with the by a pre 86 and go. Prior to 85 they didn't come with roller cams, Even in 85 they still had the crappy 7.5" rear. The brakes suck and the stock clutch was weak.

Try looking here Guide for a conversion guide. If the car is a streeter I wouldn't suggest it but it appears you are more into 1/4 times and that is the best reason to go carbed. (if you are on a budget)

yea i see your point but if hes making a prostreet hes going to get into all that anyway.. lol who the hell would run a stock clutch in a prostreet/carbed fox thats bad*** lol plus a 8.8 to me wouldnt handle a prostreet to well.. but youd have to jump into rearends either way.. either model/year

Thanks for the link Canada...I really appreciate it...I really cant think about selling the "Pony" now I'm kind stuck with it...My son has really grown attached to it and it will really proabably break his heart if I were to sell it. Plus I got a cage, guages, seats and harnesses, all the suspension, done on it and I really dont want to start over..

I still think its a better idea to start over. I mean yea, everyone gets attached to their cars. Ive had mine for 8 days now, and cant even drive it, but still I would never want to sell her. But honestly, you need to think of whats the better idea. Having the car you love, but it being a total pita, or having a "different" car that runs perfect and made your life alot easier. if all esle fails, flip a coin.

im converting my 88 car to carb...and it just more economically effecient to spend money on a carb, intake, fuel delivery than it is to spend it on and upgraded efi manifold, throttle body, new injectors, new fuel pump, and maf setup!

why dont you make a prostreet hatch.. put a big gigantic blower and find someone to put it together.. lol sorry i cant see the point in changin a efi to carb.. id sell it but i see your in a hard place.. lol

Or do what im doing lol. Check sig. But I found the easiest way FOR ME is to get a 16 gal prostreet fuel cell, ditch the stock fuel tank and run new AN lines to my Demon carb use a holley black 140GPH pump with a mallory return style regulator, no worries, simple and works like a charm.

Thanks for the input gopher...My mind is made up I'm gonna do it :nice: Its a ton of money that I spent on fuel/air delivery to the engine that was in my opinion wasted. I pretty much could have built a stroked 331 with the money I invested in all that junk..LOL!!The car is not a daily driver, and pretty much sees the road only to go to a cruise night, carshow or the track..So gas mileage or drivability is not a concern. I know that EFI is alot better than carburated when its working 100%., but it just did'nt want to work for me. Eventually when this engine goes I'm going to put a 429 big block in it

Why are 15 year olds giving tech advise on something that when they were born, wasn't even used anymore? :p

bc in some cases i have even more knowledge than you.. im not saying you dont know your stuff and i know everyone else has been around 5.0s for a good longer than me but even tho i hadnt that doesnt mean i dont know cars.. my posts make perfect since alot of the time and even if there not completely correct its then my mistake and your supposed to learn from mistakes.. I have every right to post my opinion in any thread and even if it didnt help, its the thought that counts about me wanting to help someone out with there problem... all im doing is just trying to help.. i may be 15 but that doesnt mean i dont know cars when ive been around cars since the first day i was born.. i was picked up in hotrod chevy trucks when i was 6 and brought to school in prostreets from then and to now.. but do NOT go around insulting my intelligence about cars WHEN i have not said anything to you.. that is ONE line i will not let you cross..
