What in the EGR system would have the most likelihood of causing both an OCCASIONAL once in a blue moon ping and sluggish acceleration..there is nothing wrong with my car I just have heard some people talking about this topic and am curious

pinging can come from the EGR gasses not being introduced when they should be (and the computer is dialing fuel back and timing up).
lack of acceleration can be from the gasses being introduced when they should not be (read while accelerating decently).

the big components in the EGR are the valve itself, the position sensor (tells the puter how open the valve is) and the EGR solenoid.

carbon getting hung up in the valve can cause issues. a position sensor which is not in calibration with the actual position of the valve can cause issues. and the EVR having a bad electrical connection can cause issues. there are other things like bad vac lines, etc which can also cause issues. from what i have seen (and that might be different than other folks' experience), the EGR stuff tends to not be that finicky - if there is an issue, it is not that subtle.

OT: Vancouver eh? do they still have that baseball field complex down there? many many years ago i played in a state baseball tourney in your town (I dont recall where the field was, but the outfield fence was about a mile away - there was a fire station [i think] on the other side of the centerfield fence at the main field we played on). and it was HOT! nice place though.

I am not 100 percent certain where you are talking about...but if we are on the same page you may be talking about HB Fuller..if that is the field then yes it is still up and the main fields fences are quite far away...

so if there were to be an egr related problem...it would most likely be more obvious than ping and lack of accleration?

yeah, to have ping and lack of acceleration would require the EGR to be out of whack both ways (not working when it should and working when it should not).

with the wonderful tune of the SN's, i would be lookin at things like a dirty MAF (or other things like dirty IAC and ECT).

the EGR is decent (on foxes atleast) with tossing codes, except for when the EGR position sensor is out of calibration. that is not super common though (the EGR seat can wear or carbon can jamb the valve open). again, not the first thing on my list.

have you pulled codes yet? the KAM (puter memory) can store codes even though the CEL is not on. the CEL has a higher threshold criteria to light off than the KAM storing codes (stupid intermittant issues that are not a huge deal can store a code in the KAM). might be worth pulling codes just in case - that can help one to diagnose.

that sounds like the field perhaps (i dont remember the name at all). i remember the outfield kinda sloped downhill a little - i hit a ball on the screws and rolled it out to the fence because the ground was so hard - it was like a parking lot. LOL). good times.
