electric choke wiring

Has anyone ever used the starter solenoid to wire an electric choke? I was reading that on the face of the solenoid, the terminal closest to the firewall is 12v switched with key. How have you wired your electric choke? Apart from this my 4 barrel swap has gone surprisingly clean. Thanks for any help in advance. -Danny

It's switched 12v when the key is in the start position, when the car is running, you will see 6-8 volts from the resistor wire feeding the coil. Thats why this s not an eficient place to get 12v for the choke. People do use it, but you will have to adj the choke cap to compensate for the reduced voltage as it will take longer for the choke to come off. An alternative is to use the green with red stripe wire going into the voltage regulater. THis is switched 12v off the switch. I have also used this wire to trigger a relay for switched 12v when using a one wire alternater.

agree totally ... have done both (or rather all three) things and now supply choke voltage off a relay panel with a separate fuse .... not so good to use that reistance wire bypass on the solenoid as noted by barnstang .... but it will work - just not optimal ....

Use the STA terminal on the alternator. That's what Ford did on cars with electric chokes.
