Electric fan ?

What gauge wire to use to properly rewire my electric fan. I am taking my dash out to rewire some of...well everything, but what gauge wire should i use to rewire my electric fan, its an accident waiting to happen. The guy before me used some wire that is much to small for the fan, its run off a toggle switch.

ive had a 3G, the guy before me wired the fan with wire that is much to small. And the toggle switch is in-adequate also, when the fan is running you can feel it heating up, etc. I wanna up grade the switch and the wiring while my dash is out. And im going to run a fuel pump cut off switch as well, as a anti-theft device of sorts. Any suggestions where to put it? I was thinking under the seat with the relay, do you wire it before or after the relay?
 
For an unknown fan, using no relay, I would use 8 AWG wire and switch ground.

A fan controller with a relay is a very wise idea.

oh, i have a relay. Its just the wires are to thin of gauge, they are getting warm and so is the switch, the relay is fine. Its the wires and switch that are warming up, etc. And the connectors at the switch, the plastic was melted on them. Its an accident waiting to happen as i said and im going to re-wire the whole thing with different switch, etc.
 
If you already have a relay, 18 AWG wire on up should have been fine on the control side of the relay. Your switch (on the control side) should have been fine too (a relay draws ~250-750 mA, or .25-.75 amps).

It is the common and NO terminals on the relay that handle all the current, and all that wiring should be under the hood, near the fan.

I guess I am confused. In general, I would use 16-14 AWG for the control side (unknown relay and unknown run of wire) and still use 8 AWG on the power side of the relay (common and NO terminals; often 30 and 87 respectively).

Thanks, thats what i was looking for. Out of all the systems on a car i know the least about wiring to tell you the truth, but im learning quite a bit. Im going tomorrow to pick up a book or something about wiring to help me along, and i have alot of diagrams, etc.
