electric fuel pump questions

ok clear me up on a few things...lol.. i want to go electric pump with 1/2" fuel lines from the tank to the regulator. If i put a higher psi pump on "lets say in the 40 psi range" and get an adjustable 6-20 psi regulator and drop it down to 6psi do i have to run a return line? As we all know there isnt a return line on a classic stang and "yes i know i can get one from a resto shops" but i dont want to run a return if i dont have too. So the question is: will it hurt the pump no having a return line?
i really want to keep my orginal gas tank as well... so a fuel cell right now just isnt gonna work. thanks everyone...!!

What do the electric pump instructions call for? A return line will keep the pump cooler. I have a fuel cell now but before, I ran the return line to the filler neck. It was convenient too, because if I ever needed to siphon fuel out I just unhooked the line and ran it into a gas can.

i like that idea of running a return to the filler neck.... how did you tap into it?

Originally I removed the filler neck and drilled a hole in the side a little bit above where the top of the hose slips on. I ran a piece of steel tube that curved toward the tank, about 90 degrees. Inside I used a small length of fuel hose and clamped it on the tube where it met the filler neck. I pulled tight and did the same thing in the outside to keep it sealed. Without the 90 bend, the fuel will splash, even upward out the cap.
If I were to do it again I would have welded the steel tubing around the hole.

i got a novi 1200 with a 306 & aluminum heads and running 8lbs of boost

or you can look for a pump with a built in bypass.I have a Product Engineering pump.its similar to this one and maxes out at 36 psi.The silver fitting runs back into the tank,less hose and $$$

why...??? The paxton supercharger kit for the classic come with a mechanical boost ref. fuel pump.... please explain further...

People have run blow thrus with a dead head regulator, but usually end up going to a return style regulator it seems. The major complaint is that when the throttle is closed while under boost, the carb floods. Dead heads don't react as fast and can only lower the pressure by releasing gas into the bowls. Sometimes stalling the engine. With a return regulator the pump only has to keep the pressure the regulator is asking for. As latamud said it is easier on the pump. I have seen filler necks somewhere that have a connection for a return line.

Why not run the full pump from the kit? No wiring, no noise, gets the job done and you already have it.

i think im going to ... the kit that i got doesnt have the fuel pump, but they are 200bucks from summit and it sounds alot easier for the time being... thanks guys. I will just run bigger fuel lines 3/8" and down the road when im ready to step up my boost i will use the 3/8 line as a return and go electric.
