electric water pumps..............

I just got a Meziere electric water pump. That's the brand that I've heard the most about. Is it a good brand? I think so, but I'm not sure. A lot of Stangers seem to use it. Is it the best brand? I don't know.

I got an electric, because I'm installing a Kenne Bell supercharger, and I wanted a water pump whose performance did not depend on engine rpm. I've heard that belt-driven pumps often spin too fast at high rpm, and then cavitate. Also, belt-driven water pumps spin too slow at low rpm.

I think it probably does give maybe 10 horsepower right off the bat, because it runs off of electricity, not the belt. However, electricity comes from the alternator, which is running off of the belt. But I guess the alternator generates electricity whether anything uses it or not, so as long as the alternator is not yet maxed out, it seems like using it to run the water pump would give you extra horsepower.

It should also result in even more horsepower, ultimately, because your engine will have better cooling.

I've heard similar to what Randy said. I've also heard of people having serious worries about the failure of electric water pumps.

I'd be especially worried about failure if I were planning on supercharging. I'd hate to be in full boost and have a short circuit zap the water pump, while every other accessory runs just fine.. no indication that you're about to experience engine failure momentarily.

At least with a belt driven water pump if the belt breaks you can tell right away (losing your power steering, etc.)

I've also heard if you plan to be beating the crap out of your vehicle on a regular basis (road racing, etc) not to bother with the electric, that it won't be enough.

I remember Bob Cosby doing a dyno test before and after and he made 3 hp wth the pump swap (on a DOHC). that was posted on the Corral @2 years ago. might want to do a search, but the gains were small.
Hey Randy is there a better option to go with? I think i read the pumps from the 03/04 Cobra were improved and if so i'm assuming its a direct bolt on for my 96. Mine is almost 10 yrs old and i want to replace it before it NEEDS to be replaced.

I just saw they made 5 rwhp on a 05 GT with a Meziere ewp. You can cool the engine while its off with a ewp and its constantly doing 55gpm while the factory does 10gpm @ 1000rpm. I'm planning on getting one, i need all I can get on my quest 4 300rwhp!

Independent dyno tests on 99-04 GTs have resulted in 9.9 before. Tim @ MPH said it makes around 6RWHP...all I know is that I could feel it....but I got U/D pullys also now so its all covered lol. Its probably not worth the worry though.

correct, all the newer water pumps have the "anti-cavation" plate on the back. price is @$75.00 + shipping on them

While the alternator does generate electricity constantly, its load on the engine depends on the current (amps) being used. The more current needed/used, the harder it is to turn the alternator.

IMHO, the "plus" for an electric water pumps is that it pumps constantly at a known rate, regardless of the current engine RPM's.

Back when I looked into getting one of these, it came with an indicator light for your dash to let you know that the electric water pumps stopped pumping.

Ok how bout just watching your temp gauge? I constantly scan all my gauges while driving now weather I'm in the stang or my beater. That is kinda the reason for having them.
Anyways, I've lost a belt before in an area with no turn offs I was forced to drive that car about a mile or so to a turn off area and did no damage, of course that was a SBC and they are kinda hard to break.

doesn't matter, once that pump stops, its almost instant the temp shoots up. mine has caught me off guard many times, cost me the race at the last Modular Shoot-out. mine is now wired wth an idiot light. this electric pump caused me more headaches then any other mod on my car. I highly recommend you DO NOT use this pump on a street car.
