eliminating center console

After I had the dash done I did the center console and bought the graphite door panels from a different GP. It looked alright, would have been better with a black carpet though

Definitely needed something to tie it all together. Sounds like you got it covered though. I'm definitely going to switch from grey to black carpet myself. I think it was on 50resto for like 100 pre-molded 'n all. Not bad. Not sure about a pontiac.

You can always get some nice black floormats.

Yep, that was the next bet was floormats. 100 for a carpet is a great deal, you can actually save a pretty good amount of weight just switching to a lighter carpet lol

Hmm ... my mistake. I was always under the impression the center console weighed more than that. Oh well ... I'd still delete it in favor of something simpler - relocate things to make the use of available space more effective. Makes the interior seem a little less cramped when it's not full of decorative, cheap plastic poop. Although the smoothed and painted console above does look pretty killer, too.

Now that I think about it ... who the heck needs a mirror button, anyway? I've adjusted mine ONCE since I bought it two years ago. Might as well convert to manual mirrors (were those ever available on the '87-'93 models?) and not bother with relocating the button when getting rid of the center console, and then just move the cigarette lighter ... er, sorry, the POWER OUTLET (because NOBODY should smoke in a 'Stang) to someplace just under the passenger-side dash, out of sight and out of the way (but still within reach for stuff like a G-Tech meter, radar detector, or whatever). Then, just figure a nice, clean way to fab a frame for the A/C controls and/or radio, fit some boots for the shifter and handbrake, and ta-daaa! You're set.

Probably not worth bothering with armrests, now that I think about it. When I get to a point where I'm not using the notch for a DD anymore, I doubt I'll be doing any long-distance driving in it enough to ever miss the center armrest ... or maybe even the door armrests, now that I think about it. (Painted aluminum panels, manual windows, and no power locks? Hmmm...)

my notch has manual mirrors. it will likely be tough finding the parts to convert one, but they are out there. however, it should not be difficult at all to relocate the mirror control, and personally, i would look around for a smaller, less obtrusive switch in a junkyard to change over to and hide it on the underside of the dash maybe.

Eh ... maybe. Perhaps that panel right under the steering column would be an okay spot for both the switch and the power supply oulet?

Another thought on the console delete - what about leaving the stock A/C control and radio front portion of the console, then just fabbing a little front-base panel so it stops before the shifter and has just carpet from there on back? Then mount the mirror switch and power outlet right there in the panel? Only downside to it is that it would involve basically sawing the console into 1/3, so maybe that's something to be tried on a junkyard console first to see how it'd look...
