Emission's question

For those that live in Washington, when registering your vehicle's, do you have to have an emission's test run, if so, is just tail pipe, or is it visual and tail pipe?

you only get emissions done if it is due that year. you can find out at your registration place (where you register your car with the state and get your plates done) and they might have something posted when your emissions testing is due.
i didnt have to get my stang emissions tested cuz it wasnt due till next year (i registered it back in may).

Bringin a car in might be different?? Do out of state cars need to be sniffed for that 1st year in state??

There is no VISUAL check up her like in CA and other states, it is sniff test and depending on vehicle wither on or off the dyno..

The reason I ask is, I'm probably going to be moving to Washington in the next couple of years, where I'm at right now (Alaska), we have a visual and tail pipe, and is only done when registration is due (every other year), just wondering

I bought both of my mustangs in Oregon and when I registered/licensed them in Washington they had to pass emissions at that time and also when its your time again.

If you live in certain counties (King, Snohomish, one other maybe?) you will need to have the car(s) done before registering. It is not a visual, just a dyno sniffer and gas cap check.

almost never a visual check... they're always too lazy but they will sniff it... so if you don't have cats, chances are you won't pass... I BARELY passed, and I'm positive it was because of my clean, fresh engine

Not real concerned about cat's so much, as anything added to the engine and requiring a "carb" number, ie: tubro's, headers, etc...

If you have a 95 or older, they put it on the dyno just to have you run it up to 25 mph, and thats where they sniff it. After that, they will sniff it at idle. They dont load the dyno or strap you down or anything. If you have a 96 or newer, you dont do the dyno, they just check the obd for codes.

Are you positive thats all they do for obdII cars? Cuz I dont wanna put my stock H pipe on to pass if I dont have to lol. I got MIL's and ****, so I should be good right? As long as it doesn't throw any other codes?? I have a code reader so i could always delete them right before lol.

I don't own a OBD2 vehicle, but I have been told anything newer than '96 (OBD2 manditory?) they plug into the ECU while doing the test..

Check your codes, but if you clear them, it will set a p1000 code, which basically shows that the drive cycle tests are not completed. It may or may not pass with a p1000 code, depends on how grumpy the operator is.

now, if somebody's ecu throws no codes will the tester just not know if say... the car had no cat? since this just for pretend ecu is made for racing it just keeps hush about emissions, would the pretend driver not have to worry at all when getting tested?

I am not an expert but from what I know and have heard, as long as it is (for lack of a better term) a factory ECU with OBD2 port in the right location, and it answers what the test equip wants to see you should have no problems as long as it passes the sniff test. I know on 97 and later explorer's they have dual O2's. One before and one After the Cat's that basically are checking that the Cat is there and running right. Not sure if the Mustans used the same system or not.
