Engine blocks

Hey guys,

I'm doing a blown 331 stroker build up, it will be N/A for a while, but I want to get a new block that can handle the more power (KB blower, in the future) I want. please be resonable, I'm 16 with 2 jobs and trying to afford all of this. so Dart is out of the question basically. I could use my stock block, but I want a block that is stroker ready. I've heard that DSS's blocks have been cracking and the bores were poorly made (different sizes). any help would be great

how much power are you going to push with the blower?

my experience with the cracked dss block was second hand, so it may or may not have been their fault. just in responce to my problems, i have seen quite afew people with the same issues and dss blocks though.

plus the level 20 block your looking at is still a stock block i believe. not going to be much stronger, considering your paying over 1000 for it with shipping.

my goal is to have a 9 sec street stang 10's would be fine too! I've seen it done a few times. I've seen one with a simalir engine build up and KB make 600 hp and 800 trq at the wheel and ran 8's, insane, but so I need some were around 600+ hp?

and your experience was second yes I do know that, and I talked to the owner, he going to find out the prices for me.

You'll need more than just 600 hp to pull 9's. You'll need a kick ass suspension. Try getting a mexican block. Std. bore or .010 over people claim to have around 600 hp on them. SVO blocks are around 1800 or you can pick up a BOSS block for around 1000 (what I used for my 347). The boss block will require some slight modification but any competent machine shop can do it.

yeah SVO block thats way expensive!

BOSS block where do you get one of those? and can they handle this power. ya I thought you'd need more then 600 to get to the 9's, 10's would be just fine, thats still fast as hell for me! but they did get 9's in the 331 ways to waste an LS1 article with 600 some at the wheels so...

I knew a guy that had one sitting in his garage for years. They can take in excess of 900 hp. They are a very heavy duty block (weight I think about 30 pounds more than a stock HO block and have a much higher nickle content). They are very hard to come by. Simply because the boss guys want them for there vintage cars. You can find them every once in a while on ebay.

ohhh sounds hard, so there arent any other alternatives then forking out like 2k for a race block to handle what I want to do?

You can find em. Just takes some lookin. Ebay has a 351 boss block for sale as we speak (although that dosen's help you any). In a few days or so I'd bet one goes up for auction.

problem is I really dont trust EBAY for my engine parts, because I cant go actually see, I dont want to buy some POS. I've heard many horror stories...so I dont really want to do that.

So is my only option to get a DART or SVO block?

I've had good luck with getting and selling parts on Ebay. Just look at there feedback. If they have like 100 feedbacks and they're all positive they're probably not gonna screw you. You might be able to get by with a mexican block. That'll run ya a couple hundred bucks.

yeah I talked to my dad he doesnt really like that idea because he said I'd get the block then get it tested and it'd be cracked. He doesnt trust anyone but manufactures with engine parts. So, I dont know what to do, am I going to have to save up for a Dart block?

Your requirements - dirt cheap block and 9's or low 10's - are at odds with each other, especially if you are trying to do it with a 302 based block. My suggestion is to go with a stock 351W block, which is much stronger than a 302 block, and can be found easily and for next to nothing.

In any event, you are going to have to come to terms with the notion that you will need a fair bit of money to go as fast as you want to. If you plan to run it at any IHRA or NHRA member track, you will need a fair bit of money just for the safety equipment required to run in the 10's.

Ya I've come to terms, I'm only 16, I've got alot from my 2 jobs, but not this much. I've only heard 1 bad remark about the DSS block, I'm still thinking about going with that. My goal is around 600-700, but it wont be there for awhile so it gonna run N/A for awhile. because the kb is gonna cost me 3600. So I'll just get a all forged 331 stroker and dss block. Vic jr heads etc

Yeah the stock windsor block will take 600 hp. BTW I wouldn't bother with a forged crank. A cast steel crank will work fine.

I want to put ease on my mind when I get the blower. And its not that much more for a forged crank. I'd be way to worried it would bend or crack etc. Just how I am..

yea maybe do a stroker based off a 351. the 351 block is stronger and with the extra cubes you might not need as much boost to attain your HP goals. There is also going to be less stress on a 351 running lower boost than there would be on a maxed out 302 with more boost. just some ideas and ways to save a little cash....trust me i know what its like trying to build a nice motor while in college.

Yeah, but I don't want to do at 351w stroker, I don't want to buy a new hood, or buy all the new engine mounts, a/c brackets etc etc. And add the extra weight. I wont max out my 302 on boost either this is going to be a daily good weather driver.

thanks for the idea though, I priced it out and all the pros and cons, i like the 302 block better.

I personally would be a little uneasy with a cast crank also.
