 so i went to crank up the stang earlier and at idle i noticed a cut back poppin noise coming from the exhaust then my service light comes on. these were the codes that came up 01-p1000, 02-p0305. any help? and just to throw in..... the car does leak oil from the drivers side valve cover gasket that could have ruined a few plugs but hey idk. any help fellow stangers?:(

What is the model year of your car? Any mods?

Note, for the 2002 model year, DTC P0305 indicates a secondary Ignition Misfire. The SOHC 4.6 modular motors have the spark plug holes pointing straight up. They are really bad about collecting ANYTHING that falls on top of the motor (oil/water/coolant/dirt). Usually the moisture in the spark plug wells will ground out the spark plugs causing a misfire. If allowed to continue, it will damage the boot insulation. So even if the condition is repaired, the boots have already been damaged.

Please note, it is vital that the spark plugs wells be throughly cleaned out before removing the spark plugs. If not, the debris will enter the combustion chamber and a "smoker" is the usual result.

The post did not give the model year. Therefore we do not know if this is a coil pack or COP model car. But, for this case, the recommended action is the same. Clean the spark plug wells. If the plugs are old, replace them.

If this is a coil pack car and the plug wires are old, burnt, oil soaked, replace them.

The oil leak from the valve covers is going to have to be fixed, or the problem will come back. The valve cover gaskets on the modular motor are actually very easy to change out. Put a bead of RTV between the front cover and head. Torque the bolts to 10 Nm or 89 inch-pounds. Do not over torque.

Check the #5 COP. Look for moisture and evidence of spark burn. Consider replacing/swapping. If swapping, use a COP from the other side (#1).

Consider doing a through cleaning of the oil on the outside of the motor. Including the spark plug wells.

Check the ground strap between the motor and car frame (left hand side). Is it installed, clean, and tight?
