Engine cooling fan question.

My cooling fan runs anytime the key is in the "on" position regardless of the engine temperature. Is there a relay somewhere that might be stuck? Any other possibilities? It's a '90 model by the way.

im not sure about the 90. but there should be a sensor on the bottom of the lower intake. there is a wire (yellow i think) with a red boot on it that is supposed to be hooked to this sensor, but if you just ground that wire instead of hooking it up to that sensor then your fan will be on whenever your ignition is on. take a look and lemme know what you see.

Looks like I have a bad sensor. I replaced the coolant sensor last spring but it was a cheap one from a parts house, not a Ford part. When I dosconnect the wire, my fan stops. Guess I should have spent the money in the first place.

Change the sensor AND why dont you add a continious fan switch in there also?

My SVO's fan does the same exact thing but it started after I replaced my sensors with all new MotorCraft parts

my fan is wired to a LED in my car so I can see when its on. I also wired in a over-ride switch so I can force it to be on whenever i want.

You know, that sounds like a good idea... i dont know if i've ever seen my fan come on

actually no. between the exhaust and the stereo I cant pick out a fan. plus my fan is from a pontiac sunbird and is not that loud. I've had my fan die on me and my car overheat before so I'd kinda like to know its running. Plus it doesnt help that I can only hear out of one ear.

Well, I pulled the sensor tonight and checked it with an ohmmeter. The sensor checks out fine. Looks like I've got to trace the circuit. God I hate electrical work! Anybody close by and really bored?

sounds like your sensors are fine as well as your fans. take a peice of wire and run it from the wire that hooks to the sensor to under your streering wheel to a switch. then take a few inches of more wire and ground it to something close.

Also a good way to know if your fan is on with your stereo on is your volt meter might read 1 or 2 volts less. at least thats how i do.
