Hi all,
Purchased a 97 Cobra SVT Ragtop last weekend for a Christmas gift for my wife. Bought it from an owner whom purchased a 03 Supercharged SVT Convertible. About 15 days ago he installed 2-3/4"long tube headers as well as exhaust front to back. No CATS. I have posted here before for a problem with this car cutting out at 3,500 rpm. This is not the story on the car. This car, when you hit WOT at the end of the power band, the car smokes blue. This problem was evident the first time the owner hit the key after he put the aftermarket exhaust on and cold air intake, and not before - approx 300 miles ago. As well, if you ever hit WOT from say 2,000 rpm in a higher gear, after about 3 or 4 seconds the car will cut out for a second and cut fuel to the car. Beyond this, the gas mileage went from 29 mpg to 20 mpg. He declares it is the computer after a lot of research. He guarantees the car doen not smoke blue due to internal engine problems. I have no reason not to believe him - he is telling the truth. Why else would he spend $3,000 on the exhaust rather than fix the engine. He was going to order a chip that would supposedly fix his computer from the US, but somehow when he went into the dealership, he walked out with a new ragtop.

Any help would be great. I am bringing this car to a Mustang specialist next spring to fix. I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

I have a pic of my car attached as a link if you care to see it.

Jason

How many miles are on the car. When it cuts out, does it totally shut off or sutter?

The exhaust will make the car run rich and lower the gas milage.

I believe Blue Smoke is the cause of bad fuel

Blue smoke = oil. Could be due to having no cats, could be more serious. Either way, its oil.

70,000 miles on car.

It basically shuts the car down for about 2 seconds, and then it runs as normal again after that.

I couldn't tell ya why it's cutting out, but blue smoke is definately oil burning. Raw fuel would be in the form of black smoke.

What brand headers and CAI??
I have seen an issue or two here on stangnet where longtubes were installed and the result was metal shaving recirculating through egr and producing digs in cylinder walls, Blue smoke. Could also happen with a metal CAI if there were any metal shaving or finish that flaked off and ended up being sucked in.

The only way that it could be be burning oil is if there is oil gettting into the combustion chamber. That is usually a sign of internal engine damage. As GTBlack said about the metal shaving thing, this could defintely score the cylinder wall and cause oil to get past the rings. Could also possibly be valve seals leaking oil into the combustion chamber due to higher oil pressure at higher rpms, although I haven't heard of this problem on a 4.6. Just throwing out ideas. Sorry to say, but blue smoke is bad.

well since the blue smoke is coming in the higher rpm, it is definately related to the cylinder & piston rpm. if it were a valve stem seal it would smoke at the start of the car rather than up higher in the rpm's. so it has either messed up the cylinder wall somehow with the l/t install & the metal shavings, or a blown piston ring well that's my take on it, i very well could be wrong & i hope i am for your sake, cause blue smoke is bad

Long Tube Headers are a MAC-TF9640.

CAI is a Velocity Tube - PRO - M Combo

What if compression is all good on all8 cylinders?

P.S. If it is a ring or something similar - what is the average bill at the end of the day so I know if I am getting taken or not.

well the bill is not going to be cheap, cause they will have to go through the whole engine & check every ring. i was going to have this done to mine 98gt, cause the same thing happened after my header install, minus it cutting out. it might not have been caused by the headers, but i didn't notice it until after it was done. they really couldn't give me a price on it cause they weren't sure on how much time it was going to take to find the source of the problem which i can understand, cause time is money. but they assured me it wasn't going to be cheap so i ended up trading it

That sucks man, I know the 4v's get very expensive....I picked up a practically new shortblock (5miles on it ) out of a '01 for $2k. Look around at local shops in your area they might have one laying around or might know of someone who has one to let go for cheap.. Good luck...

man seeing this thread & a couple of the responses about the metal shavings is making me hesitant about putting the l/t's on now cause i never heard about that before & since it appears to possibly have happened to my last car, i dunno if i want to put them on now. what do you guys think, is it a fairly common problem
btw-sorry for being a little off topic

Wasnt there a whole debate about 4v MAC LT's causing excessive scavenging thus leading to oil consumption Maybe that could be the problem...

This is exactly what I was going to say. However, I thought is was merely the Mac LT and not related to the number of valves.
