All right, heres the promblem, i just got a set of chrome-moly piston rings and cant figure out wich ring goes in the top groove of the piston. Theres a cast ring and a chrome moly ring(The shiny and the black ring)-, and i dont know wich one goes where, the directions didnt tell me anything.
My other promblem is putting the pistons in the block in the right order. Does the pistons go 1-2-3-4 on one side of the block and 5-6-7-8 on the other side, or do the pistons go in 1 on one side with 2 on the other side and so on( i hope i explained this well.)
Thanks for the help in advance

Well the pistons will go 1-2-3-4 on the pass side of block and 5-6-7-8 on drivers side.

On the piston rings I believe that the black one will go on top then the shiny one then the oil ring. But I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong on this.

i just did this on my 96 explorer engine. its 1234 on the pass side and 5678 on the drivers side. the little notch on the piston top indicates that that nothch goes towards the front of the engine when reinstalling them. i used speed pro rings, and the labels for what went where was on the flaps of the box, not the instructions. And mine had the black rings in the middle and the semi-shiny ones in the top. the rings are also marked as to what side is up or down, it does matter. and as I learned....make damned sure the old ring grooves are TOTALLY and absolutely cleaned before putting the new ones on. the best way is to take one of the old rings, break it and use it to gouge the old carbon crap out of the ring lands. otherwise, it will be a total bitch getting the rings to compress in the lands, and they either wont go in the cylinders or you will break a ring tring to get them in. just make sure theyre totally clean and youll be fine though.

there is a mark on the top /or to indicate the top of the ring... the shiny ring is the moley ring anf the black ring is the 2nd ring...cool?? Some times the moley ( top ring will have NO indicator and that is cool.. it can go in the poston either way!! but most of the times the dark ( second ring) will have a mark!! number on the rod to the outside of the block!! 1234 on the right side ( pass side )) and 5678 on the dr side!! Did you know the feaking chevys dont number the rod OR the main caps....Duh... LOL

hope this helps...
