engine not taking 5 quarts, stock oil pan 93gt.

i don't put 5 quarts in on a oil change, only takes about 4 1/4 if that. what are the chances of it being my dipstick? i'm afraid to just drop 5 quarts in cause the reading goes off the charts (way high on the dipstick).

The dipsticks on 5.0's are known to be off.

Next oil change, change the filter and drain out as much oil as possible.

FIll it with 5 quarts, then put the dipstick in and note where the oil is. SCORE or mark a line here and note this as your FULL level.

well, if you put 5 quarts in, then the new mark you make will be correct. if it makes you feel any better, my 'new' full mark is way above the stock full line. i think i was full, per the stamping, after about 4 quarts.

You are taking out both drain plugs when you drain the pan, right?

Way too much and you will leak oil, thats a sure fire sign. Your oil pressure gauge, if its the stock ford, isn't the most accurate, but should read higher. 5 quarts puts my mark about twice as high as where the full mark reads.

well this could explain why my oil pressure isn't dead center....i bet it would be dead center if i had 5 quarts in and not 4. usually when driving about 80mph 2200 rpm the needle drops just a tad under center...

My pressure gauge actually sits center at idle, then jumps a bit higher under accel., this is with 5 quarts, but I am certain that gauge is far from accurate.

The oil pickup is at the bottom of the pan, oil level won't really effect pressure. What happens when you put too much oil in there is the crank get submerged and splashes around. It might overwelm the pcv system and smoke like crazy. I have scene engine's get way overfilled with and the worst I have scene is an engine smoke and run funny.

to add to what Jason said, when overfilled (takes a bit of overfilling), the crank whips the oil to a froth. froth does not pump too well.

You should also consider the possibility of haveing a bunch of crap/sludge in the pan displacing the oil.

I had a similiar problem Five0, I put too much oil in and it shot back up the dipstick hole (dipstick was broken off at this time). My check oil light illuminated and I added the last of the 5th quart of oil and it still came on. Come to think of it the same thing is going on in my 95 as well. I can pull the dipsticks of both cars and they will still read a little over what the norm should be. But the light still comes on, maybe it's just a bad sensor or something.

well 5 quarts is a totally empty pan..............most of the time the normal engine has atleast 1/2 a quart of oil and sludge still in it.......best way to be accurate is do a engine flush..............

all depends on the motor but it isnt that diffucult 5.0's have a 5 quart pan end of disscusion......................
