engine overhearing, fan not coming on...HELP!

engine overheating, fan not coming on...HELP!

just started last night....after driving for literally 10 minutes in stop and go..the engine gets all the way up to the hot side, and when I opened the hood, the fan wasn't running....what do you guys think? Could this just be the thermostat, and should I just start by replacing this?



also, is the thermostat the same part from 98-03 for the gt?

if you still have two sensors like 96's. bad sensor on drver's side. unplug it and fan should come on. if it does replace sensor. if not i don't know. i hate these computer controlled fans.

Can't you use a tuner to set it to come on all the time?

it is on my tune for it to come on...that is the problem...

check fan relay,fuse for fan also

checked the fuse...looked good...couldn't find a fan relay in there though...thanks for the tips!

Disconnect the fan wiring harness, and jumper it. See if it spins up. If so, you've just eliminated the fan itself, and can troubleshoot elsewhere.

what do you mean by jumper it? How do I do that?

Take a look at a wiring diagram (autozone's website if you don't have a haynes/chilton manual) and find what wire is what.. unplug the electrical connector, and run a wire from the positive to the positive side of your battery, and a wire from ground side to the negative side of your battery, and see if it works.

I was going to look it up for you, but realized I don't know what style fan you are using.

Nope, shut it off.

Battery terminals are hot at all times, so any time you want to test something electrical, you can do it with the vehicle off. (This will make it especially easy to check the fan, you'll hear it spin up right away if it's working.)

you guys are awesome! I just hooked it up...middle was power, outside ground, and some random orange wire....and it spun when hooked up to the battery....so the fan is good...but I did notice the ground wire connector on the plug looked kinda burned out...where should I check next?

check the connector from the wiring harness to the fan motor, my car was doing this too i had to get another connector from a donor wiring harness

I just checked it...thought that was the problem...it is working...ruled out that, the fan, and the fuse...what else could it be why the fan isn't coming on? is the thermostat the only thing left?

Check the connector on the Engine coolent temperature sensor. If it seems fine test the sensor. You can do this with an Ohm meter. With the engine cold disconnect the wiring harness connector from the sensor and check the resistance between the two terminals, it should be about 58k ohms or so, then plug in the connector and start the car and let it warm up to operating temp, shut it off and test the resistance again, this time it should read about 2k ohms or so. If not, replace the sensor.
