Engine Parts

Hi, I have a 1996 GT and am in the process of picking out all of the engine parts I want. So far I have picked out the K&N Generation II FIPK, the C&L Trueflow intake Plenum, the Edelbrock 75mm throttle body, the Ford Racing High Flow Intake Manifold Base Kit, and the Ford Racing High Performance Cylinder Heads. I know this is a commonly asked question that all the senior member hate hearing, but what type of hp would you estimate I would get.

I am also interested in getting a different cam, but am unsure how to figure out which I want, I want the car to remain a daily street driver so nothing too radical.

Also I would like to upgrade my headers, but am not sure which I wanted to get, I was looking at the Ford Racing Ceramic Shorty Headers, would these work well.

I know there is an intake plenum test with results posted on Monday, so I will wait to see which intake plenum wins. Basically I am interested in getting more NA power, as of yet I do not want to switch to forced induction. So if you have any recommended changes, I would appreciate hearing them.

Sorry for the long post, any help would be appreciated.

if you can get long tube headers, then for sure get those. if not, i'd recommend a set of JBA shorties. :)

now is that Ford Racing manifold kit the same as the PI headswap? if it is then you can get PI cams or even a more aggressive cam grind.

as for horsepower..with a good tune and all the mods, perhaps 260 at the wheels, but thats probably at least 10 off either way. good luck!

if you get the FRPP Intake Manifold (SVO intake), the 75mm t-body, C&L Trueflow plenum, and K&N FIPK will all be useless. they don't work with the SVO intake.

call comp cams, they'll get you what you need.

get long tube headers if you plan to stay n/a. the Ford Racing headers are about worthless.

again, you cannot use a plenum with the SVO intake.

hope this helps.

So apparently I havent figured out the ford racing parts yet, but according to the previous post The K&N, throttle body, and Plenum are not needed, however what connects to the Manifold? I am new to modifying engines. Also I dont know how to figure out if the Intake Manifold is the SVO one or not, in their catalogue it is called the High Flow Intake Manifold Kit, the part number is M-9424-E46. As always any help would be appreciated.

Also which method would provide more power, using the High Flow Intake Manifold Kit or keeping the stock manifold.

I am new to modifying the engine, there would still be an air intake, so why would the K&N not work? yes, that part # is the SVO intake. it has an oval opening. the standardt GT intake has a round opening. that's why the t-body and K&N won't fit.

Ok thanks for clearing that issue up, which would offer more gains the new intake or the common bolt ons like the K&N, intake plenum, an TB?

Thanks for the help

ok, here's the deal. you have what are called NON-PI heads. to be brutally honest, they suck. you must use the SVO heads with the SVO intake. the combination of the SVO parts will gain you alot more hp than the bolt ons you have listed. but the SVO stuff is expensive. a better deal would be to buy what are called PI heads (PI heads = Performance Improved heads on the 99 and newer GT's) and the 99+ intake manifold to go with it. then you can add the plenum, K&N and t-body if you wish and it should be cheaper by a long shot while giving you just as much hp.

So if I get the PI Heads and Intake it will offer similar gains while allowing me to use the bolt on's? The PI Heads you are talking about are the Ford Racing SOHC PI cylinder heads, and the Ford Racing Intake for PI heads? Basically theses are the same heads and intake as on the 99 and up Mustangs correct?

Thanks for the help

let me clear this up a bit...

NON-PI heads. = on 96-98 GT's
SVO heads = Ford racing heads
PI heads = 99+ GT heads

three different types of heads. kinda confusing, but what did you expect from Ford?

if you see an intake manifold from Ford racing that is specifically for PI heads, it's the Bullit intake. the Bullit intake is expensive.

what i suggest is the following.

99+ PI heads, possibly used. new i think they are around $700 for the pair. used you can get them for around $500.
99+ intake manifold. it's plastic and only costs about $200.
then you need a chip for your ECU to work right with the new heads. and ofcoarse all the gaskets and stuff.
you can use your stock plenum and t-body or buy the aftermarket ones. it's up to you. with just the headswap and intake, you will get about 60rwhp.
