Engine racing up in neutral on a manual v6

I have a 2002 3.8l v6 mustang and whenever the vehicle gets relatively warm (not sure if that is a coincidence) and I am coming to a stop light I put the vehicle in neutral and coast to the light. As I am coasting the engine races up to anywhere from 2,000 to 3,500 RPM'S. Does anyone know what the problem may be? This happens when both the AC is on and off. Please help any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I've had the same issue and had no idea what the deal was with it. I just ignored it, because nothing bad happened.

It does it to me too....But mostly when my foot is on the clutch. I have a 95 V6

i had the exact same problem, mines a 2000 5pseed...i just ignored it becaues i didnt know why it did it either...it mostly happened when my ac was on, it would drop to about 500 then shoot up to 2000, whats wierd is it just started doing that not to long ago, i had it almost a year and never had a problem with it..but i have no idea why it does it

It has to do with emissions. the engine revs a little higher so it can push the unused gases from the exhaust back into the egr.

Yeah i know atleast some years have a recall with them (my 98 does). It has something to do with the speed cable and servo. if you go to nada.com it tell you about the recalls.

I read about that once somewhere too, but I've never had that revving issue or my accelerator getting stuck with my cruise control. *knock on wood
