I am starting the teardown this week. Can I use the old hydraulic lifters? What should I look for on them? Thanks a lot.

Most people get away with reusing them. How many miles on the car? If you are going to store them, store them in a tupperware container filled with oil.
They're inexpensive - I wouldn't put a high mileage component back in an otherwise newly rebuilt engine. As for storage, it really doesn't matter. You should use a quality assembly lube when you're putting it back together, and the system should be primed through the distributor hole before starting. Priming until you get a good stream of oil out of all 16 rockers will fill the lifters with oil before starting.
Are you talking about the hydorolic roller lifters? If so you can re-use them. I asked many people and those don't go bad. Roller lifters can last a life time...its the flat tappet lifters that need to be replaced with a camshaft.
if their flat tappet replace about 40 dollars at most parts stores if roller they can be reused if the roller surface isnt all marked or scored ford racing has a set for just over $100
