I woud like to rebuild the engine on My 88' Gt this winter and my plans are for this car to be a quick but reliable car, most likely mods like,
Exhaust
Intake
No A/C
Gears
pullies
Maybe a couple other small things... anyways
Im planning on buying the plain old steel rebuild kit from Summit for like 250$ while i have the wole engine out are there some other things i should replace that dont come in the kit???Like valve seals???springs???
and how about putting a cam in the car, can some one inform me about the Pros, & cons!?!Any other input welcome.
thanks, your help greatly appreciated!

I'm not familiar w/ what all that kit has, but I'd imagine it comes with typical bearings, rings, gaskets, timing chain etc. Replacing freezeplugs, waterpump, oilpump, cam bearings would be worth looking at as well. Also check your harmonic balancer for signs of it coming apart.

With the engine apart, it is a great time to look at getting some heads to meet your goal. Maybe some Thumper heads/Tmoss intake?

I would also take the time to put a cam in there that will suit whatever your goal is. Quick and reliable is subject to broad interpretation.

Good luck,
Wes

I would definaltely do something with the heads. Replace the valve guides if not replace the heads altogether with some GT-40P heads if you are on a budget. they are only like $500 for the pair and that is brand spankin new completely assembled with valves, springs, seals, etc.
I think that the stock cam is awesome....so that could stay but definately put a new timing chain and oil pump too while you're at it. I think the summit engine kits are good...they even sell one with forged speed pro pistons for around $450-$500. Hope this helps.
