I've heard alot about this "Engine Restorer & Lubricant" by Automotive Restore Products--- Does this stuff really work, or is it bad news for an engine? (also what about the 2 in 1 fuel cleaner?) I need some help.

From what I have heard, its like Pooring a can of Vasoline in your motor, is makes everythng 'act' newer and better, and seals rings for a bit, BUT I did it before I heard that...Its bad news, 1 major problem is that it clogs your oil pump sometimes....Plain and simple DONT...no Oil additives just run 20-50w if your buring oil, I do it to be safe, and at most youll lose 1hp on a very very bad day in hell.

i dont know about the vaseline analogy. the lucas stuff is reportedly like that (like the oil "honey" we used to use way back when). ive used restore (no differences noticed), and my observation was, relative to most additives, it's pretty viscous, IMHO.

the only real bad thing to use is anything with teflon, or any other crud that doesnt belong in motors. if its burning or leaking so bad that 20-50 doesnt help, fix it. just my two cents worth.

If you want a 'Restorer' for performance or for better engine output...I would stand by saying up the wieght on the Oil 20-50w made my car smoother, and it helps with compression too(what that restorer tries to do inorder to give you 'the lost horsepower') If that doesnt help, like HISSIN50 said, fix it.

P.S. Mobil 20-50w is what I use..i think its with that 'Cleaner' crap or whatever, blue bottle..

the whole sales pitch with restorer is that its supposed to fill the scratches in the cylinder walls. i dont see that happening. and if it did, what about cross hatching. does it supposedly fill that too. i dont buy it.

i am one whom runs 20W-50 9 months of the year (ambient temp ranges from 80-110). older mills have more tolerances than fresh mills. when they get some miles on them, i see no reason not to run higher viscosity oil in them, esp if you see extreme conditions.

another way to look at it is that if 10W-30 or 5W-30 is good for the coldest temps imaginable, then one could reason that 5-30 flowing at start up in 0*F would flow no better than 20-50 at 90*F.

you really want the thinnest weight you can run that keeps pressure at the most extreme condition your motor sees, unless you are compensating for other issues.
just my two cents worth.

CC29, what is wrong with your motor? might be of more assistance if we know what is up.

Nothing is wrong, its just that my motor is approaching 90000 miles and I wanted to know if there's anything that I can put in it to release all that lost power.

i dont think you will notice any difference with an oil additive... i wouldnt ever use an oil additive. different weights for different seasons, if you are really worried about it, switch to synthetic oil, mobil 1 is the best. but its really expensive. no noticeable power gains from that either =) if you want power gains, just get a good o/r h pipe, and a good flowing catback, good investment...

CC29, i have used the 2 in 1 fuel system cleaner and i was surprised at how well it worked. Its cheap and it works great...toss it in an empty tank every time u change ur oil and u'll b good.

wow...that has to be one of the funniest things ive ever heard. but anyways..mine has 191k on it and the motor has never been opened up for anything, and it runs like a champ....ive got a few little oil leaks and a trans leak....anyone know of anything to help that out

Find the leaks, and fix them. Don't put a band-aid on it, fix it and don't worry about it again.

ECU, it is said to be best to pull it, but someone did a thread about how he did his easily without yanking it. i would take some perspective (mine.LOL). if it has almost 200K on it, at some point in the not too distant future, chances are something will need to be done to the motor. were it me, unless the leaks are horrible, i would leave them alone. hate to do all that work, and then not long afterwards, pull it all to do some engine freshening. just my thinking.
good advice on the fixin of leaks. if it leaks, manually fix it. no snake oils.

hmmm....so does that mean no stopleak then? I used some a few oil changes ago and stopped using so much oil between changes, leaks went away and I'm noticing less metal shavings in the oil than previously (yeah, I know that's bad - I'm workin on it). if I shouldn't have used it...oh well

my two cents worth:i dont have a problem with the stuff, as long as it doesnt have teflon (teflon clogs things up top). i have used the stuff a lot on all cars throughout the years. i dont see it doing any real harm.
