I am swaping my 98 gt 4.6 and the 5spd for a 2003 mach 1 engine and 3650. My first question is how do i get the starter bolts out, they look like a real pain to reach. Second has anyone done a swap like this? I have heard removing engine and tranny as one is the best but i do not have a car lift. Any tips or problems i can expect? Thanks for your help

You want to use a really long extension to get to the top bolts and the one nearest the engine is the worst by far.

Here is an article that talks about the conversion from a 2v engine to the 4v.

I use a 1/4" ratchet with an extension just long enough to reach past the end of the starter. The top bolt is a pain to get out as you have to "feel" the socket onto the bolt. Once you do that you are set. To put it back in, the easiest way is to take s small piece of paper towel and lay it over the socket, then stick the bolt head into the socket. The paper towel will cause the socket to grip the bolt. Another choice is to use a small magnet in the socket to hold the bolt. Then you can use the extension and socket to guide the bolt into the upper hold by feel, and then tighten it up... Put the bottom bolts in first, and snug them up to hold the starter in the correct position to make getting the top bolt started a bit easier.

I have never put that top bolt back in, and have never had any problems with it. Once you get it out, leave it out!

With that new engine, you might have to do some fuel system changes. Does your 98 have a return style fuel system, or is it returnless? Other than that, I can't think of anything else that might be different.

It does have a return fuel line. Should i just swap out the fuel rails?
