erratic fuel level gage

My son's 99 V-6 has an erratic fuel gage. Upon fill-up it will show full, but soon drop to empty, and show a low fuel light. I imagine I will need to drop the tank, but would like any help available. Also, is there any difference between a V-^ fuel pump and one on a GT?
