Ever dropped a tranny in a garage? Need help.

Stripping the car down and parting out the 302 to make room for the 351 and and beefier tranny. Working on the car in a one-car-garage and I need to pull the motor and the tranny next. I was gonna lift the motor out but since the tranny has got to go as well, I figured lift the car and drop them at the same time. Any suggestions on which is the best way to go about doing this? Obviously I don't have a hydrolic lift in the garage so I can't see how this gonna be easy getting the tranny out much less if the motor and the tranny are still connected. Thanks in advance.

I've done it before too on my brother's 89 LX. Your probably best off removing the tranny first from the bottom and pull the motor out from the top with a cherry picker. I know you can rent them at Uhaul (around here at least). That's how we did his, then we basically bench pressed his t-56 into place. I remember my arms shaking like crazy as I tried to hold it steady enough for him to get a couple of bolts started. LOL. Good times!

Some parts stores rent engine hoists(cherry picker) too. Its easier ti drop the tranny then lift the motor out but me and some friends have taken motor and tranny out together before. Its not hard but you may not have enough room the 1 car garage.

Do them one at a time be safe thats a lot of weight to try and get them out at the same time.

when we took my dads tranny outta his chevelle we put the back wheels on cinder black and jackstands, and the fron on 2 sets on jackstands (6 in all) then we just used a regular floor jack with a piece of plywood on top of it to lower the tranny down....and we had just ehough clearence in the garage then too pull out the massive motor

Chevy trans are easier to get to because the tunnels are huge.

Get a set of the tallest jack stands you can find. You may want to use a floor jack in aiding you pulling trans out. It's kind of hard to balance it on the jack so maybe you could put a large(r) piece of plywood on the jack to try and stabilize everything.

I'm used to pulling the trans on a lift with a tranmission jack.

Pull it all out with a cherry picker, me and my dad did it in my 95 V6 Stang in the garage. Just rent one from a local rent center.

is it an auto or 5spd?? the 5spd is simple as can be. i hated takin out my auto. had to get a 4 wheel dolly, 3 people and 2 jacks. pain in the butt but wasnt THAT tough

A tranny jack is the easiest way to get the tranny out from underneath. It is designed just for transmissions and has a scissor like lift and a drive screw that raises and lowers a plate. The plate is V shaped so that the tranny fits in the center of the plate and doesn't move around. I used one and a couple of jack stands under the A-arms. I then put a floor jack under the oil pan with a piece of wood to support the engine while the tranny was out. If you are going to pull the engine too then I would use the lift (ie. cherry picker) to support the engine while you pull the tranny from the bottom. Then yank the engine once the tranny was out the bottom.
