This guy I know, said that he would love to have a foxbody, but hates the fact that they aren't a lot of money. He said he knows everybody would look at him and think "look at that broke ass guy in that old Mustang."

Here is my take.

First, who cares what people think.

Second, people who have nice fox Mustangs most likely built the car themselves. They're car guys. They might have done one of, or all the body work, paint, interior, wheels, mechanical, restoration, etc. I can respect that person way more than the guy in the next lane driving a newer, more expensive, turn key Mustang.

What about you? And no flaming of said guy I know, I just want to know your take.

you know what wythor's car looks like? and mansonozz. and mustang25th. they dont scream im a poor redneck in any which way shape or form. even mine, is stock with good shape paint, interior, ect. i dont think that screams redneck. i however have seen a few that are in terrible shape, and have very redneck things done to them. like this white vert i once saw. the wheels were turned where i saw it parked, and they were at a 45 degree angle to the ground somehow, the top was all ripped up, and the hood had 347 stickers. the inside was ****, and the white paint was ****. this screams redneck poor car to me. if your friend gets a fox, and takes decent care of it, and makes sure he gets it respectable looking, then i see no harm in this. what comes to mind of what your tlaking about is a modded c5 vette. this says i have money and a wnat to go fast. however i think one of the coolest things in the world is someone who drives their fox, doesent let it just sit and collect dust, and has tasteful modifications to it, such as interior things, nice wheels, nice stance, not stock brakes, not extremley flashy paint and a good motor that is taken care of and runs very well.

if hes looking to spend allot of money, he sure as hell can, just find one with under 100 thousand miles, and he will probably have to pay to get it shipped to him. that or a nice condition t-top. then he will have a solid car that he can drive plenty before things start breaking.

if he's trying to impress people by driving a modified expensive car, such as a supra or vette, then hes trying to impress the wrong people. i modify things to make them suit my liking. if he wants a fox, then build a fox. if someone calls him a trashy redneck, then he should be able to show what good shape its in, and show them that its somewhat quick and fun to drive. if he has a good looking fox, with a goodlooking engine and interior, and someone makes fun of him for it, then the person that made fun of him is the one clearly at fault.

even if i see a civic or an old z car, or something cheap that has been well taken care of, and modified in a strategic way, i would never make fun of someone. if someone builds a rice rocket becasue he truly truly loves the styling of a riced out car, id be the one congratulating him, he put his money into it and it is the way he wants it. all power to him. only time i make fun of someones car is when they modify it to someone elses liking, like people ricing out cars for attention.

thats my take on it.

as long as the end product looks like it required thought and effort how will it look poor or cheap?
of course you can always buy a gt500 or viper to tell the world how much money you have and how small your winky probably is.

I had a 97 cobra for a little while and I have received WAY more compliments about my vert than the cobra ever did.

But I agree, who cares what people think. If you enjoy the car, thats the only thing that matters. I also think that, generally speaking, fox owners are more of a "car guy/girl". Sure there are plenty of people who have newer stangs and do all the work themselves, but when I see a nicely done fox, there is just something different about it

Okay...

There's probably 2 dozen Fox cars on here alone with $30000 plus into them, and hundreds with reciepts totaling over 20k.

well lets see, Im working on my mustang right now getting it ready, and ive put 3k into it, and I still dont have paint or a frans and some little things, so all in all ill have around 5k in it, when its all said and done, thats cheap but thats me doing all the work if my body shop did it all it would be well over 10k so yeah itn not cheap at all!!

I know how that goes. I had Hack Job almost finished, and I'm like...I'm done putting money in it!!!! 1,000 dollars later, I was done.

Plus the labor issue you talked about. I worked on my car an honest 11 months. Not 5 months of work over and 11 month period...I wored 11 months out of 11 months. Can you imagine that labor bill????????

Like others have said, if he/she is that worried about how much other people think he/she spent on their car, buy a vette or a Z or a used Viper. Just because Mustangs, especially foxbodies, haven't been in movies about street racing (except for the Saleen that gets crushed) or show up in videos doesn't mean they are poor cars. Especially now, as fox bodies are 15 years old at the newest, I love having a four eye foxbody. I get more looks in the few weeks I have had the 86 than the year I have had the 90. If you have pride, who cares how much it costs. From what I have read, most of the people here have some form of elbow grease investment in their cars. I would rather have a sense of accomplishment, even if it is through trial and error, than a "store bought" car.

who cares what everybody else thinks. if that was the case id never own a fox body stang. all i ever heard was people askin me what i drove at work or hanging with friends and when i told them i had a stang they would be like oh yea what year? 07-08 blah blah and when i would tell them 87 or 90 or something like that. they would be like why so old? man sheeeet thats how i roll and if u dont like it who cares. if ur boy is more concerned about what other people think then tell him dont bother buying our cars and save them for people who appreciate them like ourselves!!!

nothing gets me going more than seeing a high end car and they shake their head and then i blow there doors off...as long as i look at my car and im happy with it, thats all that matters... i look at my car and i see pure sexiness, so let him go waste 30,000 bucks while were happy with what we have...

Concerning yourself with what people will think of you because of what car you drive is shallow. (and i don't mean that to bash the guy, he really should just do what makes him happy and screw everyone else's opinion so long as he doesn't hurt anyone else).

Well, all I'll say is the most popular question I get regarding my Fox Body is "HOW MUCH MONEY HAVE YOU GOT INTO THAT THING!?" - so you figure that one out

If he wants to spend a lot of money, he can have mine for $50K

First, I agree with everyone else, who cares what other people think. I modify and daily drive my car because it's what I like.

I love foxes for a coule of reasons.

1) Good quality aftermarket parts are everywhere and cheap.
2) You have options to build your car a certain way. i.e. drag, auto-x, open track.
3) I beat the living crap out of it. It has never let me down (knock on wood) and if I do break something, its not only cheap, but easy to fix.
4) There is no better sound on this earth, than a fox with a cam.
5) EFI
6) Overdrive

I could go on for hours. Bottom line, you can pick up a decent fox for $3000. Build the motor, drivetrain, and suspension for about 10K and have one badass car. Plus the car will be reliable and comfortable...at least for me.

Also, there's no better feeling than taking someone down in a newer, expensive sports car. Especially if the owner/driver doesn't know jack about cars and physics.

This is an interesting topic. Being a car guy who can do everything but body and paint, I can take a look a someones car and tell if they are a car guy or not. Plus you can look at the car and tell if they take care of it or not.

I'm not talking about top of the line parts, new paint, etc. If you see a fox with older paint, junkyard parts, but is real clean and runs strong. I instantly respect the owner and the car. But if I see a car with wires hanging everywhere, trash in the back seat, hadn't been washed in months, etc. You really don't respect the car or the owner.

If someone can honestly look at wythor's, mansonozz, and mustang25th's cars and tell me, "Redneck and his mustang....yada yada." That is someone who doesn't get "it" and never will. Those are the people whose opinions do not matter to me.

I love foxs for the fact they are cheap to build. I have very little into mine, and love it for that. With a budget and some common sense you can have a car that looks expensive but really isn't.

I actually do care what others think, to a point. I didn't build the car for anyone but me to like it, yet it does feel good when others compliment you. I think he will find out, more people in the know will appreciate a good clean fox, and those who aren't in the know, well who cares what they think.

I got far more attention and compliments driving my 5.0 around than i ever did in my '03. Just cuz it's old doesn't mean it's crappy. There's a difference between driving an '87 Mustang and an '87 Escort around.

But with that said, i don't think I could daily drive a Fox Mustang anymore. It has nothing to with what other people think of me. I'm spoiled by new car amenities. I love A/C, leather, high-tech gadgets like intelligent key, bluetooth and NAV and having a new car in general. Plus i'm growing out of the whole "sports car" thing if you know what I mean. I'll own my 5.0 forever...but it will be a weekend car. I kinda like driving around in a normal quiet car now...makes me appreciate the Mustang more

But i've said this before in other threads. Judging someone by their car is the worst way to judge someone. Some of the wealthiest people I know (and i know a few millionaires) drive the most plain-jane car's you'd ever imagine..while a lot of my friends who live paycheck to paycheck drive flashy expensive cars they can barely afford.

I agree with you 100%. I have way more respect for built power than bought power.

we all know right now the main stream foxes are not worth alot of dough, that being said you put in alot of $$ or litte money into them. I have spent some decent money sofar and I'm still not done and I have done 80% of the work myself, but it is also nice to look at your car at say hey I did this. This buddy of yours is nuts, the foxes are making a huge come back, I have had alot of people come up to me and ask me stuff and even look at the car at gas stations and it isn't even done yet, doen't look like a heap but needs paint, so I can't wait for looks when it's done.
The other thing he could look forward to is being a member of a family like ours. We take pride in our cars, we help each other out, bust each other in fun, host meets, etc. It's much more than the car itself, it's the whole experience, tell him to stop worrying about it and jump on in .

I work in Century City, CA and are surrounded by high-end cars every day. I don't ever recall feeling self-conscious about the fact that both of my cars combined are worth less than the cost to replace a cupholder in most people's cars around here. In the end alot of them are dropping a hefty monthly payment on a car they bought just to keep up with the next person anyway. I certainly don't blame anyone for wanting a nice car. There is nothing wrong with that unless you know damn well you can't afford it. I plan on buying something more up to date eventually but the thought of taking on a car note does not appeal to me right now.

Frankly I feel lucky to have a car that I own outright, costs very little to keep up, and most importantly, I love to drive.

As for not feeling self-conscious; that's not entirely true. Whenever I drive my '90 to work and the damn thing start idle-surging that s*** is a little embarrassing. I know people are thinking "WTF is this idiot trying to prove? We get you drive a hot rod. Woopty-freakin'-do!".

Going through life letting other people dictate to you what is cool is just plain stupid.

There is only one reason to own a non-trailer-queen Foxbody and that's because YOU think they are damn cool.

For the record I have gotten way more compliments on my $5,000 87 Fox than I ever did on my $15,000 99 Cobra.
