A fellow stanger performed the home grown exaust cutout method that is posted on: http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/cutouts.htm

He's kept it open for about 2 months and now his "Service Engine Soon" light is on constantly.

I took a look at the car and cannot find any other problems. I think the open cutouts are causing the problem, but he refuses to buy into that.

What are your thoughts? Could leaving the cutouts open for so long cause the Service Engine Soon light to come on?

If they are affecting the rear O2 sensors, the check engine light will come on (at least if you're talking about a 96 or newer Mustang).

He's got an 01. It's louder then my setup but too loud if you ask me. I bet this particular type of cutout affects the O2's.

In that case MIL eliminators should take care of it, but get the codes read first to make sure that is the reason the MIL is on. The codes generated by the rear O2 sensors are P0420, P0421, P0430, and P0431. Autozone will usually pull the codes for free and if the codes are different then there is something else causing the MIL to be on.

he needs to go get his car scanned to see what codes they are by something like Autozone who does it free. If it's O2 sensors he should close the cut outs up, and re set his computer by pulling the (+) battery cable for about 30 minutes, and see if the light goes away or comes back.

Good suggestions. He's here now, and we'll close them up now then reset the computer, and see if the light still comes on. If so then he's making a trip to AutoZone.
