The 289 used to be running too rich cause i would smell lots of gasoline while running it, so after messing with the carb, i got the mixture and idle to what seems like a good setting. (i.e. It doesnt smell like gas when im sitting at a stoplight.) But now, when i am idleing or when i let off the gas at speed, there is a moderate volumed popping/gurgling sound coming from the exhaust. Is this alright? Is this indicative that there is something wrong with the mixture?

Thanks.

From what i know, poping is caused by a exhaust leak most of the time, not ehough back pressure on decel causes air to be sucked in and a poping occours. My headers are cracked and it pops a whole lot on decel. I heard it can also be a carb leak, air geting in that end. Thats my 2 cents...

My car did popped like that before a major vacuum leak was found on the back side of the carb - a plug had fallen off. The car also didn't like to start or idle until warm due to the vacuum leak.

I really didnt describe it right, Im sorry.

It sounds more like a tennis ball being bounced around in a bucket or a metal box. The sound is definitely from the inside of the mufflers. Both of them. I know what an exhaust leak sounds like, and its nothing like that. Its only when I'm at idle too or when i let off the gas at speed. Maybe its nothing. Maybe its just the way flows sound.

I'd recheck your mixture, sound like it's too rich.
the popping sometimes comes from unburnt gases in the exhust system.
Just my 1/2 cent.
