Exhaust Smell in Cabin

Hello, new to the forum.

I have a 67 convertible Mustang with dual exhausts exiting out the rear. When the top is up and windows are down, the cabin reeks like exhaust. Normally, i wouldn't complain about the smell, but I've been driving the Mustang to work lately and I smell like exhaust thru most of the day. Anyone else encountered this? Ideas?

Check your firewall plugs and seals. I had the same problem and found the seal around the lever for the throttle did not seal tightly around the shaft. Once i sealed that up the smell went away.

I've had a similar problem,I checked the fuel system & smell was worse inside my trunk, after checking I noticed that the rubber fill tube clamps where loose. Tightening the clamps seems to have taken care of the odor

Do your exhaust tips turn down out the back of the car? Mine were just short of the rear valence panel and the car smelled like exhaust. Installed turn downs and extended out beyond the valence and the smell went away.

Check the seals at the shifter. Also check for leaking oil or transmission fluid hitting your exhaust. If exhaust is entering your cabin you need to fix it fast. It may cost your life not to.

My vote is that it is coming in through the trunk. If it is coming in from under the car or the firewall etc. that would mean that you have an exhaust leak which needs to be fixed. If you don't have an exhaust system leak, it's then being pulled in from the back. After a drive, open the trunk & see if that's it.

After many sniff test it, I found it was a combination of a small hole in the firewall, and exhaust leak at the collector, and bad seal in the trunck lid. I have fix all the problems and the issue has gone away.
