Exhaust System Woes

Goddamned exhaust system is driving me crazy.

Remember the rattling noise I was posting about a few weeks ago? It was a tailpipe too close to the underbody. I can not adjust it to where it won't be to close to something- be it the underbody, rear axle, or gas tank cover.

I tried using heat wrap around the tailpipes to eliminate the rattling- it made the exhaust sound very pingy and metallic.

So I figured the best solution would be to nix the tailpipes all together and bolt some turndowns onto my Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. WRONG. I didn't realize how much the tailpipes suppress the sound of the Flowmasters- when the turndowns were on, the mufflers produced so much resonance and vibration at low RPMs that I was afraid the interior would shake itself apart. The car seemed quieter with open headers than like this!

So I'm back to the tailpipes, one of which is still rattling and annoying the **** out of me.

My current line of thinking is buy quieter mufflers and run turndowns from these....anyone have any experience with Flowmaster 50 series 3-chamber mufflers? I'd assume they are significantly quiter than the 40s, anyone have any experience? Any other suggestions are welcome as well.

Thanks.

Why not just swing by a muffler shop and have them heat it up and bend it out of the way. It will probably only be 40-50 bucks, its not free but much cheaper and faster than buying new mufflers.
