What are the best exhaust setups? Headers, mid-pipe, mufflers? Opinions?

Any brands notorious for trouble?

It all comes down to sound preference and budget. Almost all mufflers sound good with an X pipe, a lot sound good with an h pipe, some shouldn't be paired with an h pipe or the car will sound like a burly pickup.

My two personal preferences, taking into account my modest budget, are as follows:

MAC Shorty headers
MAC Off Road H Pipe
Flowmaster 50 Series Mufflers (aka 3 Chamber or Force II cat-back)

MAC Shorty headers
MAC Off Road X Pipe
MAC Flowpath Cat-Back

Others sound great, including Borla, Bassani and Spintech, but you will pay a premium for those. I am not a fan of Magnaflow, though many on this board are. I am also not a fan of SLP on a 5.0...

Search this forum, and hit up youtube and search the different combos...

stay away from the pypes midpipes. my car came with their catted x for shorties and it hangs downs way too low and ive heard other bad stuff from them.

If i could redo mine i would go with BBK longtubes, BBK x pipe, Magnaflow mufflers and stainless tails.

Pretty much ANY of those X-pipes without transmission crossmember hangers SUCK. They're based on the same design as that damned UPR cat'ed X-pipe I've got, and I have the same problem with it hanging too low ... plus, it sags all the time (requiring constant adjustment) and the cats are welded too far back so that it hits the trans crossmember. I just keep it around for smog testing purposes, so it spends 11 our of 12 months of the year in my spare room.

Love my combo and get many compliments on it. Got one just on friday. I have 1 5/8" unequal length headers, bassani x and magnaflow CB. I went with what was proven to provide the most power and ended up LOVING the sound.

FRPP headers! (the best imo)

Magnaflow SS X or H (depending on sound taste)

Cat back of your choice (again depending on sound tastes) I would recommend SS!

+1 i have the off road x pipe from pypes and it scrapes so much... i even have coat hangers keeping it up a little bit where the stock hangers were because the dumb thing doesnt have any hangers. the Pypes Violator mufflers aren't much good either.. they are loud but they don't line up quite right on my car. I will be looking for a new setup soon

Yes, headers, midpipe and mufflers are the best exhaust steups. Opinions are worthless, cept yours, they are the only brand notorious for trouble. And you'll get what you pay for.

Loudmouths sound sloppy, especially on a 5.0

MAC's have a great agressive tone but also accentuate that classic Mustang rumble...to me its no better than that.

Ive been leaning toward flows or bassanis, but idk. Ive never heard bassanis on a 5.0 fox though. I personally think slps might be a bit too much for my taste.

Whatever headers you go with, pay the extra green for ceramic coated. Chrome eventually chips off and rusts, and painted just suck all around. The lower engine bay temps brought on by the ceramic headers save on starter motor life, too.

Flows are too played out, even though they sound pretty good. I would go with the 50 series mufflers (Force II Cat Back) with an O/R H if you MUST go with Flows.

Bassanis sound great, but are pricey.

I run Mac Long Tubes, VRS off road X, and Spintech Pro Streets. Don't run this set up!

I don't want people copying me!

just remove it all, headers back. it'll be a unique tone and guaranteed to boost you to badass status

Shoot.....don't even run the headers. Just let the exhaust shoot out the side of the heads.

Has anyone actually ever done this?
