Explorer intake - Injector + Distrib. ?'s- (+pics!)

OK ... finally getting around to installing my Explorer intake. I was SOO careful pulling the injectors out, but somehow the caps of two of them broke, along with one O-ring. Can I get just the new caps, or do I need to buy the whole new injector? This sucks!

Also, my distributor is hard to turn now that it's out. It squeeks pretty bad and thought it was the culprit of the underhood squeeks, but wasn't sure til now. I lubed it up, but I think it's a temporary fix. Does this mean it's almost dead?? Oh, yea, I marked the distributor so it'll go back in correctly! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Rio found a kit that replaces the caps and O-rings. I forgot where he got them from but maybe he'll see this thread and tell you. I'm running my car with some briken tips on my injectors... but I had no other choice at the time when I put them in and I cant tell that they are broken.

I've never busted a pintle cap, but I was always under the impression that they could be purchased at Autozone or something of that sort. Hopefully RIO5.0 will chime in here. He used to have an Explorer manifold and I believe he actually busted a few tips off his injectors too. To my knowledge, he didn't replace the whole injector.

As far as the distributor, it sounds like that your problem is semi normal. To know if the distributor or ignition is shot, it'd be best for you to put the car on a dyno and see if it is down on power. Stick her back in there with a new cap and rotor and see how she works.

Here you go...Thats a Napa p/n on the box...I put these on 24s...they will fit the stock 19s also...3-4 bucks per box for what you see...get a few boxes, the mothers like to "snap" right at the very end of pushing them on...

On the dizzy...clean up that bore inside the block...the alum/steel will oxidize causing your problem??? hit em both with a Scotch-Brite pad, clean it up...replace the o-ring on the dizzy and lube with some Vaseline...you should be good to go after that...unless it the dizzy/rotor itself that seems bound/sticky...

The MS93334 U/L intake kit will have that oring for the dizzy...I use that kit, minus the u/l gasket...that has to be the GT40 one...kit works mint...

RIO ... thanks man! You have just saved me over $150!! I went to Ford right after posting and nearly s#*t myself! $96 a piece for the injector, then Autozone wanted like $58 a piece, but ... no stores had em! I will be off to NAPA now! Thank you SO much! Thanks too for the advice from the rest of ya.

1105 ... I was gonna have to run some of the broken caps too. Two of them are only 1/3 broken, but one disintegrated!! Thanks for the reassurance that it will at least work!

Stunner6910 ... I marked the rotor position on the cap, on the piece under the cap, and on the distributor - just to make sure they all line up again. I then used white touch up paint to mark the distrib and the block to make sure it went in right.

Thanks again to everyone!

i'm about to switch over to the cobra intake and needed to know everything you all are saying. how did you mark the distributor?

Just pull your cap, crank the motor by hand til the rotor is pointing at like 12:00, or directly at the firewall....undo the dizzy bolt and pull the dizzy up...the rotor is gonna swing away,,,thats normal, its coming outta the cam gear....DONT TURN THE MOTOR OVER FROM HERE ON OUT....swap your intake....when ready for the dizzy re-install..put it over the hole...grab the rotor and put it at, lets say 10:00...slide it in the hole...wiggle it a tad when you get down some and fell it stop...you have to engage it in the cam gear...it should drop down all the way now....Where's the rotor pointing??? you want it back pointing towards the firewall at 12:00 again..if its not..lift the dizzy some, move the rotor a tad in the correct direction you need to get 12:00...drop it back in again....it take some practice, but you get the idea....
All your trying to do is mesh the cam gear and the dizzy gear to get back at 12:00...

most important is...DONT TURN THAT MOTOR OVER ONCE ITS REMOVED and youll do just fine re-installing it....

thanx rio, but there should be no reason for me to turn it over right. i mean, the belt won't be coming off so it'll pretty much stay stiff, or do i have to remove the belt, i'm trying to get a mental picture but going blank.

Your right...belts can stay...the motor will only rotate by the bolt on the balancer...Its really not that bad...just use 12:00 as your standing in front of the dizzy...you know what i mean...

Look at the base of the dizzy before you remove it...youll see a little vertical "notch"...you can mark that in relation to the block....thats one portion of it...but the rotor still needs to be at like 12:00.....so when you ready to re-install...get the rotor at 12:00 and line up that notch at the base of the dizzy....she should fire right up....timing will need to be reset of course...
Dont worry about the rotor moving when the dizzy is outta the motor...you can move that all you want...dont mean jack...so dont freak if it moves once its out... :D

No problem on the hijack ... I dont care, I learn more when the threads stray a little anyhow. As long as it does some good to someone! I got those parts from NAPA .. it's all good. Fits nice and should have the whole thing done tomorrow. Man ... mine had a bunch o' carbon in the lower's runners. Got them all cleaned out - finally! This intake should flow like mad - I have it ported and gasket matched SO well! I'll post the results when done. Here are a couple pics of the Explorer intake ...

Here's another one ... actually - two. The runners are smooth, even though the second pic doesn't make them look that way. I also smoothed the hell outta the flashing and mold marks on the outside.

I don't know if he has Explorer injectors or not, but if he does - that seal kit above is for a pintel (stock) style injector and the Explorer injectors are disc type, so they would use a different kit part number.

Nope ... I am using the stock injectors from the mustang. I just got the lower mounted and am gonna start re-installing all the other stuff. Hooray! I was happy to see that the Fel-Pro gaskets are the same diameter as the heads are. I was worried that gasket matching the intake to the gaskets, would leave me with a choked situation. More later .... :nice:
