explorer intake

hey guys, i was wondering if an explorer intake from a 98 would fit on my car, i also wanna know if the elbow and tb would work on my 95 as well, i can get one real cheap and was just wondering if it would all work together and fit properly or if its too good to be true... Also what accesories would i need to get to make sure everything works ok?? Any help appreciated thanks..

With the elbow your factory (or current) throt. body will fit like stock, along with the EGR tube/EGR from the pass. side header. Realy the only thing you need to do is block off or cap or plug the un-needed vac. lines.

As stated earlier, everything will work like a normal intake swap.
You'll need the following items for the intake swap:
GT40 upper to lower intake gaskets
FELPRO lower intake gasket set MS93334 has the blue silicon (instead of the cork) lower intake end gaskets (this has the GT upper to lower but the lower to head gaskets work with the standard GT40 intake)
Thermostat housing gasket (also recommend a new Mr Gasket 180* or 195* balanced HP t-stat)
Throttle body to elbow gasket
Elbow to intake gasket (I forget if this is a Fox TB to intake gasket)
teflon tape for the sensors that go in the intake, or you can use pipe dope.
EGR valve gasket
coolent
Oil, oil filter
dielectric grease for the distributor cap posts
PCV valve, PCV filter screen, and PCV grommet (all 3 Motorcraft preferably as some of the aftermarkt PCV valves are crap)
And for good measure I'd replace the ECT and ACT sensors if they're the stock 10 year old sensors.
Additional vacuum tubing since you may have to re-route some of your hoses to work with the explorer vacuum setup
vacuum caps to block off any unused vacuum ports (the explorer intake has a lot of them)
And of course the intake adapter \elbow if you don't have one already.

TIM!!! You forgot the RTV!!

I'd suggest using RTV on the block to lower intake surface instead of those blue gaskets. They SUCK!! Mine were blown out within a month of putting them on. The RTV has held up just fine since then. Use the red, and put a 1/2" bead along the surface, then let it sit for about 15 minutes to tack up.

sounds good, where could I get all of this stuff?? Also should i get an after market elbow or just use the one that comes with the intake?

You can get all those things Tim listed at any parts store (O'Reilly's, Advanced Auto etc.). I don't see why you'd want a different elbow, unless the inside diameter of this one isn't as big as your throttle body or something.

the ones that comes on the explorer is pointed at a different angel if im not mistaken its at a 90 degree bend and ours is more of a 45 degree bend.

DOH! RTV is one of those things I always have so I guess I took it for granted with the gasket install! I however must disagree with you about the RTV instead of the blue gaskets, it is the cork gaskets that really suck IMO as they always leak. I only ever use the blue silicon gaskets for the lower intake to block and have never had any issues, but have seen people with just RTV have leaks. Perhaps the instances of leaks were just operator error?

Exactly right, he will need the SN95 intake adapter as the explorer adapter is at the wrong angle.

so i should just get the elbow somewhere else because its not compatible?? how about the tb, is a 65mm good?

If you have an SN95 you can't use the explorer TB even if you do get the proper SN95 specific elbow adapter. The Fox mustangs can't use the explorer TB either unless they do some fabrication in order to reverse where the TB cable hooks up. Use an SN95 specific elbow and throttle body and you'll be good to go.

The few guys I've talked to about it swear by the RTV over the blue rubber gaskets. FWIW, my stockers worked for a long time, even after I replaced the intake and left them on. It's just those blue ones that caused me problems.

btw the explorer intake sorta sucks, i mean on stock heads its much better than the stock intake, but if you install better heads in teh future, expect to have to change it out to something that flows.

gt40 vs. explorer intake

just a reader question here... but i remember reading before in a thread on here that the GT-40 is the same as the Explorer Intake...??? is that the case or not.
And second.... is it just me or isn't the GT-40 a great intake that flows plenty.... maybe im wrong, someone let me know..... always here to learn

I think it is better said like this: "The Explorer, GT40, & Cobra intakes are in the GT40 family." (diagonal design of runners) They do flow decent. I think there are flow charts on here somewhere .... maybe in the F.A.Q. section.

GT40 family is the better intake for street cars. I disagree with the comment that Explorer intakes suck as all of the intake shootouts in the magazines on N\A 302s always show the GT40 family near the top with the Edelbrock performer with a hare more HP up top (and the GT40 at the top with torque). TMoss is also a big believer in explorer intake manifolds, and if you want to get more power from it just have him port the lower and you'll be golden. My brother runs an explorer intake with TFS TW heads, and TFS stage 1 cam and the car is awesome.
And Chris (CMant1914), I guess it's just chance that you've had bad experience with the silicon gaskets and I've had good luck. Oh well, whatever works best for us and keeps the stangs on the road!

sounds good, i just want to have a fun street car with occasional track action, so the explorer would be a bettre choice than the street heat? how much would a port job for the lower be?
