Extended oil change and loss of power?

Anyone ever go beyond 6k miles without a filter change with synthetic? Ive been running mobil 1 for a bit beyond 6k miles and still using the fram filter(piece of ****) that i put in with the oil. Im noticing the cars feeling like a slug lately. Is this because of the old oil?

Look into the oil hole and look at your camshaft, it is probably covered with black crap.

Run some seafoam and stop being so cheap with the oil changes, every 3k or 5k at the most.

And us a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. Extended change intervals mean USE THE BEST FILTER YOU CAN GET. The filter becomes the weakest link with extended life synthetic oils.

Wheee, I spent a fortune on synthetic oil but I never change it and I use a cheap ass Fram filter

OK, I'll bite. How do you change the filter every 3K and oil every 6K. Don't you have to drain the oil out before you change the filter?

I buy the fram etended filter and change the oil at 7500. I feel no power loss. I hear people talk about what crap fram is but I think that is just personal preference I am sure there are people with boatloads of miles on cars that run fram filters.

no point in running synthetic oil if you change every 3k. if you are really paranoid just change you filter every 3k.

you can change a filter anytime you want. just put a filter on and top off the oil level. for those who don't know the oil is stored in the oil pan only a small amount is in the filter.

If you really wanted to know if you oil was degraded you can have it tested. no self apointed oil expert that changes at 3k on this board can tell you if your oil is bad. I would only have really expensive oil like AMS or something anylyzed as I am lazy. any full synthetic will last 7500+ some will last 25k plus though.

I change the filter and add oil to the filter and put it on. You don't need to drain the engine just to change a filter.


I will never buy a fram filter. Seen a few go bad and its quite commonly known and been proven they are bad filters. To each his own i guess.

Someone I know went around 7k without a change in their Explorer, thing felt really sluggish before the change and it was almost night and day after she changed it.. lot more pickup. Keep in mind this is a pushrod 4.0, and not an OHC 4.6, just throwing in my .02c though.. It was on dino oil btw. Oh yeah, and shortly after the oil pump got really gummed up.. Caught it in time though, but lesson learned. Sounded like a machine gun going off under the hood from lack of oil though.

Well dino oil is supposed to be changed every 3k so I can see how that could happen.

full synthetic should still be perfect after 7k. Dino oil is going to be long gone at 7k.

If you extend your changes, you should still change the filter every 3K. I've extened mine (Royal Purple & Pure One Filt) to 10K and had the oil anaylzed with good results - said keep driving.
