Extra parts falling out of my stang.

This little thing fell out of my latch when I opened my hatch today. I'm assuming I need it for something but the latch seems to work fine without it.
I should probably mention my latch has been destroying strikers. broke my second one after a couple weeks of having it and just wrapped it in e-tape.
Anyone know what it does?
89 5.0 hatchback.

Interesting because I'm using my key. I have a button in my glove box but its never worked
