eyesight and power steering

As I was working on my power steering tonight, I took 10 seconds to grab some safety glasses. This is something I have been trying to do for the past 6 months. No matter the task, wear some eye protection. Well, tonight it paid off....I was trying to remove the seals from my power steering ram. The hoses were disconnected, the snap ring and wiper were out, and I pulled on the ram arm to free the seals when I took a shot of power steering fluid to the eyes...luckily the glasses took the splash for me. So when you are working your car be safe....use jack stands, disconnect the battery, and wear saftey glasses and gloves.


BTW: does anyone know how to ge the inner seals out of the ram unit??

This is something I've been forcing myself to do religiously as well. First it was a squirt of gasoline in the eye, from my still pressureized fuel system when I was trying to change a filter. Then all kinds of misc. stuff falling in my eyes everytime I get under my car.

What finally did me in was when the lacquer thinner splashed up out of the can into both of my eyes and all over my face. I really did think that I had lost my sight for good. I always wear safety glasses now.

I've never regreted being a "safety freak". I still have all my fingers and other body parts in good condition.

The seals are removed using a hook shaped tool similar to a small hook using for packing. I should think a crochet hook would do the trick. (just don't tell your Gramma!)

Im only 17.... and havent got into that habit... i need to thats for sure, because i had a close encounter when putting my new power steering pump in, when i was pulling the old one off, pulling the hose from the bottom when i pulled it off the hose splatterd fluid all over myself, for whatever reason i was able to shut my eyes in time!

I need to disconnect the battery, i dont do that

Gloves? would that be to protect from hitting stuff?

Gloves make cleaning your hands easier and helps prevent lots of scraped knuckles. Buy some glasses they are only $5 or $6. Disconnecting the battery ensures that the motor does not fire while you are working on it, and there is no energy to the car at all (for shock reasons). Heck I would mail you an extra pair of safety glasses.

I always wear safety glasses. I've got about 6 pair in the basement/garage so they are always handy. The best example is once while using my pedestal wire brush, I ended up with a wire sticking out of my forehead. Glad to have been wearing safety glasses then.
