I was wondering If a older f350 5.8l efi engine would fit in a 68 fastback.
I think but must likely wrong, aren't they 351's. and if so can I convert back to a carb.. thanks

That shouldn't be a problem. There are a few thing that are different. Distributer, water pump, some cams and cam covers have no provisions for a mech fuel pump, oil pan, dipstick, larger flywheel/flexplate. As long as you use all the front of the motor including the serpentine drive it will all work if you use an electric pump. Oil pan, flexplate and dist will need to be car/carbureted specific. If you use v-belt on the front, the wp and front cover need to be changed. Make sure if it is a roller cam the dist gear is compatible.

I put a 351 out of a 94 f150 into my 68 cougar. You can use the water pump and pulley setup off of the 351 if you swap out the radiator so the lower hose connection is on the drivers side. Or you could put all of the 68 302 stuff onto the front of the 351. If you use the 302 t-chain cover and use a mechanical fuel pump you will have to get a different t-chain. The double roller that comes on the 351 doesn't allow enough room for the fuel pump eccentric. You will need a front sump 351 oil pan, 351 distributor w/gear for a roller cam (only if you get a roller 351), a longer alt bracket (or just ditch the bracket and use only the bolt to hold it in place), longer alt belt, taller bypass hose. Think thats it. You can use your water pump, front accessories, balancer, flywheel or flexplate, motor mounts, even a set of headman headers for a 302 will all bolt up to the 351.

Hope this helps.

One more thing the late model 351's have the dipstick in the block. I opted to yank it and plug with rtv and use the stock 302 dipstick in the front t-chain cover. The dipsticks are the same for the 289-351w blocks.

All you need to make it a carb setup is an intake and a carb. Oh and a fuel pump, mech or elec, so long as it's 5-8 psi.

If you are planning on putting the EFI under the hood then you will need to get at least a cowl hood for clearance. I have a stock hood and the Stealth intake barely, barely fits with a 289 HiPo aircleaner.

so if I wanted to use the engine just as is ( after rebuild of course) I would just need a oil pan, dist, headers, and a cowl hood. does this sound right, I have no engine right now so I need everything, also how hard is it to get the stuff for a t5 to hook up to it.

For the conversion you will need a Z rated T5 from Summit or a Tremec,
C4 tranny mount,
T5 conversion crossmember,
bellhousing and clutch fork from a 5.0 Mustang,
28oz 156 tooth billet or aluminum flywheel,
Hydraulic or Clutch cable conversion kit,
I am assuming you have the correct pedal assembly.
C4 tranny yoke will work with the T5 and you will have to shorten the driveshaft 3/4 to 1 inch.
New King Cobra Clutch Kit for a 5.0,
notch your tranny tunnel slightly for the shifter,
rig a shifter to fit the T5 or buy one that fits like the old style,
correct speedo gear,
and 3 quarts of Delcron ATF.
If you are doing it yourself PM me,
What am I forgeting?

Any t5 from a 5.0 car will work. It will be strong enought to hold up to a stock 351. To save costs you dont have buy a new flyweel, an old 28 oz will work. You also dont have to convert over to a cable or hydro clutch. My old set up with my t5 works great with my centerforce clutch. You can also build your own crossmeber its pretty simple and straitfoward. Do some research and shopping around and you can do the swap pretty darn cheap. Heck if your not planning on some heavy mods, a normal replacement clutch will probobly suit you just fine.
