failed inspection no mufflers ?

went to get a new inspection stick today
and the inspector failed me car is 03 gt
stock headers stock h-pipe with all cats
just no muffles. got turn downs back of
h-pipe had this setup for 2 years now
and it never failed last 2 times got it from
same place nothing's changed no check
engine light he's saying i need muffles ,BS

let me know if im worng but muffles only control sound
not emissions cats do that.. BTW i dont have muffles
because i still dont know wich cat back to go with after 2 years lol

try another shop. when i was stationed in tx some of the shops either didnt really care, or slip the guy an extra 20 and they should do it. lol, i had an durango r/t with headers, custom h pipe w no cats and mac mufflers and i had it checked on base. i used to go to the shop and work on mine and my ex's car so much that they all knew me. they didnt even check it. they just gave me a passing mark. LOL. also, no emissions tests in fl

mufflers dont help emmisions all that much. i am sure they do something but not enough to count. he might have failed you cause of noise. up here in michigan we get in trouble for too much noise(if there is such a thing ). you really need to decide on a catback soon man lol

It may be that Texas has a law requiring that exhaust tailpipes exit aft of the rear axle. This type of law is intended to prevent potentially dangerous exhaust gasses like carbon monoxide from getting into the cabin. In sufficient concentrations, CO can make you drowsy and affect reaction times and judgment making you about the same as a drunk.

I suspect that what the inspector had in mind. Hypothetical: You're pulled over by a state trooper and found to have the turn-downs in place and a brand-new inspection sticker. Could that come back to the inspector, passing a vehicle that technically shouldn't have? I think most places would turn a blind eye to this but maybe this guy is just being extra careful in today's job market...

Can you bolt in some extensions for the purpose of getting the sticker and then remove them afterwards?

BTW, doesn't that sound like ****, driving around with turndowns off the midpipe?

Try a different shop. Dumps are not supposed to pass. To be legal you need to have the exhaust exit beyond the passenger compartment, which is past the trunk such as stock or out the sides. I have a similar issue with a 93 vert I got last summer.

In NC you HAVE to run mufflers, regardless of the tail pipe exiting under or outside of the car. It is on the statute and describes it thuroughly.

Now even if you put mufflers on there, if you do turn downs it will still fail the visual part of the inspection.

Mufflers have to be on the car and tail pipes have to be exiting the car, not cut off or dumped underneath.

This is some of the **** we have to put up with in NC, but like mentioned above... Go somewhere else that has a cool inspection guy and slide him $20 extra.

See, its always been easy for me as I know someone personally. Even if he knows you, they have to be extremely careful as to not lose their inspection license. Government officers visit shops on a regular basis and pose as normal customers trying to trick them into passing a car that will not pass.
Sting operations are typical and make these guys gunshy from willing to help most people.

Im a state inspector in Houston, TX and mufflers are required to pass inspectoin... thats just the gay laws here...

I can't beleive you actually thought you would pass. You need mufflers and the tailpipes need to exit at the rear of the car (or just pass the rear wheel)

mufflers don't help emmisions at all but they are required for state inspection in any state I can think of.. some inspectors don't look

like i said i car has past 2 years in a row from same place
same set up and yes it past visual inspection last 2 times
2 different inspectors that's my reasoning

Well that's really more of a case of the inspectors not catching it or just not caring.

You could try another station and see if they let it go. However, if they rejected you, you prob need to go back to the same station and pass...which sucks.

when I had a state inspection license I put a sticker on anything.. Back then I found ways around the dyno.. now the dyno is gone in mass.

I wish we could steal the sticker machine from our chevy store that was a money maker for me back in the day.
