Failing Fuel Pump

What are some signs that my fuel pump is failing? When I would turn on my ignition I could hear it come on and now it doesn't do that anymore, which I thought was odd but everything still worked. Now sometimes when I start the car it immediately dies. It has been kind of cold blooded since I put my Holley 500cfm carb on it, but it dies like it isn't getting any fuel period. Does this sound like a fuel pump, or does somebody recognize these signs? Oh ya the car is an 85 by the way.

It's an electric fuel pump, right? If it runs OK, the pump is probably OK; dosen't take much pressure for a carb. Maybe you need to enrichen the choke just a bit.....?

If an electric pump (for a carb) has fuel in the line, and the carb float bowl is full, it'll make very little noise when you first turn the key.
