Fast Autocross 1-16-2016

How much does this wear down the tires? I want to come to one of these some day, but probably won't go balls to the walls. You got squirrley a few times! haha.

Well, you convinced me, now to find the motivation to follow thru! haha. I'm up in Citrus County, so not to far of a drive when they do it in Brooksville.

Wish they could do like a wet skid pad or something, that would be good fun too. Although, any car would be fun in that situation. :)

It's not too hard on them its aggressive driving for less than 4 total minutes. Don't think you will even notice the wear.
I can't get the video to load on my work puter'

4 minutes seems like a really fast road course session? The last 2 times I was out on the road course each session was just about 20 minutes  FWIW, it didn't really tear the tires up though

Each lap was around 50 seconds and you get 4 passes. So about 4 minutes of total drive time for each driver.

They run the event rain or shine so you can run on a wet skid pad ;). If you hit a cone you get DNF though not a time penalty. Rain rules are different.

Sounds good Rob. Definitely looks like it picks up quick on the last straight.

I think you might be confusing autocross and road course (or I suck at detecting the sarcasm). Autox is a small course that is usually set up with cones. In the ones I've attended you only get one lap at a time before going back in line to wait your turn again. The longest course I was on was probably a minute long and on a good day we would get 3 or 4 runs at it. These are fast courses time wise...top speed I've ever reached was probably 60 mph (although this may be specific to the courses set up in my area). The nice thing is that autox occurs pretty frequently and is cheap relative to a road course. I did it for a while...it was fun. But after riding with a friend at a 10/10s event, I'm switching over to the road course with the fox. The environment was great and I learned a lot about my car's capabilities at the time but I prefer the longer course and significant increase in driving time.

Yeah I agree with this. I barely noticed the wear on my tires after a few events. Just have to make sure they are pumped up to the right pressure.

Some people mark their sidewalls with chalk to make sure the sidewall isn't contacting the ground on sharp turns. I never had that issue though.

Being confused is something that I seem to have mastered :crazy:o_O hahaha

I do confuse the whole AutoX and Road-course thing all the time

Autocross looks fun! I have a 2015 V6 and am looking to autocross next month. I've signed up for it and everything...the only thing is, my Mustang is an automatic, and I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to autocross with an automatic? I heard from some that auto transmissions can overheat more easily and lead to damage.

I'm not sure if the auto mustang trams likes being manually shifted but if it won't hurt it that's the route would go. It's mostly second gear driving in my car. Basically pull off he line and short shift to second. It's a lot of fun. If you've ever drove a car before most laps are under a minute. It's only hard on the car for a very short period of time.

You should be fine for autocross, especially with a newer car. The laps are usually a minute or less and you won't be doing more than a few laps a day (and they won't be back to back). It's not enough time for you to even experience brake fade, let alone overheating of the transmission. I think what you heard is more applicable to road racing where the car is pushed hard for extended periods of time (20 min or more at a time). Even then, I have a hard time believing a newer transmission will overheat to the point of damage in a stock configuration.

My suggestion, don't worry about it. Go out and have fun! For your first few runs, don't be afraid to have an instructor ride with you. They will point out ways to improve your technique.

I would also follow Rob's advice and shift into 2nd early so that you don't worry about it. If for some reason you are at a higher speed course that would push you past second, make sure you don't sit at redline. This would be unusual....I don't think I've ever encountered an autox course where I could sit at redline in second gear.
