Sunday night, about 8:30, I decided it was too nice out to sit around the house. Daughter had been nice to me all day, and was off doing church-group things, wife was reading, and the midnight sun was getting warmed up!

I told the wife, "I'm going for a drive. You can come, you can stay, whatever makes you happy, but I'm headed out. No destination, just playing." She took the cue, that being along might minimize some of the effects of "right foot therapy", so she stayed home.

I headed north from the house, and ended up in Hatcher's Pass. First pic in the series was at about 9:00; last was about 11. PM.

Man I love Alaska!!!

Know what you mean about the mountains vs the midwest...I grew up in MO, and always planned to go back there when I retired from the Army...until I got stationed here. I came here and figured out that this is what I'd been missing all my life--what I was wired for, and didn't even know it!

As far as summertime temps, when I left the house for my drive, it was about 72. I'm about 200' ASL. By the time I got to the water pic (top of Hatcher Pass, ~3500' ASL), it was probably in the mid 40s, but that was in the shade of the mountains.

Typical summer day in this part of the state is mid to upper 60s, low to mid 70s on the good sunny days. Rainy days can be as cool as mid 50s.

In the interior (starting about 1.5 hours north of here, up to and past Fairbanks) it is frequently in the 80s for a high.

Anchorage temps sound cold until you've been here a year. My kids start wearing shorts in the upper 40s. Mid 60s is perfect top-down weather with just a t shirt on (and pants, of course)
