FINALLY 14's

Finally got the 14's out of the 'ole '96. Pulled a 14.80@93 consistently the other night at the drags. That's seems right on par for the auto, from what i'm reading anyhow. Calculated out, that's about 270HP at the fly. The car weighed in at 3640 LBS with me in it.

The PI swap is definately worth the money, I gained about a second with the PI swap, and around 8 MPH, all for around $600.00 installed, not too bad.

Now somebody just needs to spot me the money for the NOS...........

surely you are talking about the pre-modification time of 16.2, and I agree, that is definately slow.

As far as the new time, 14.8 isn't too shabby for an auto, with no converter on a 90 degree day, which is when i ran.

if you didn't know, '96-'98 stangs were the slowest of the pack, they changed heads in '99 to Power Improved (PI). This included a Cam, Intake, Head and PCM recalibration. The '96's netted around 215 HP, while the '99 and up were at 260 HP. By putting the '99 heads on my older block, i get around 10:1 compression, resulting in my HP to be around 270, which is right on with my 14.8 1/4 time.

I have raced one '01 GT and one '03, both were sticks, and both lost by around 1 carlength, so i'm definately where it should be.

Running out here in GB sucks, the altitute and track aren't that great. Some compare it to running in Denver, why i don't know. We have the Lucas Oil Division 5 race here every July, and those guys always complain they run slower here.

That should be entirely possible. I wish I had went with 4.10's. My best of 14.8 was a result of putting my friend's 15" stock v-6 wheels on, reing in a smaller overall diameter tire/wheel. which basically gave me a better gear ratio. I ran 15.007 with my 245/50/16's, and then dropped to 14.8 with his 205/60/15's.

Definately go with 4.10's.

Holy crap man... that IS slow, lol.

THat seems about a second off from the normal range though. Ive seen people put stock NPI 4.6's in the middish-low 15's.

270HP to run 14.8 @ 93MPH? No offense but your trap speed is a little low for that HP. That trap speed is typical of 220-230HP cars at that weight

My stock '03 GT runs 14.1 @ 99MPH at the track with the stock setup weighing about 3550 with me in the car. That was stock exhaust, shifter and stock airfilter and 3.27's

Even 16.2 @ 85MPH seems really underpowered...even for automatic. I have a friend who is pulling 14.9 @ 93MPH with his bone stock '97 Automatic with 215HP.

EDIT: I just read your sig. You have a PI conversion and you are only trapping 93MPH? Something is definitely wrong. You should be up around 98-99MPH and running low 14's. If anything, you did a PI swap just to get back to running where you should be with stock NPI heads

I was running 14.4 with my 98 GT (5 speed) with NO performance mods. My brother ran a 14.2 in it. Well, I take that back, I had shocks and struts but that's it. I took it to the track with like 10,000 miles on it in 1999 and that's what it ran.

I DO know that automatics were a good bit slower though because my girlfriend back then had a 97 GT (auto/vert) and it was really slow. It would do a good burnout but that's about it.

You should be running faster than that, I would think .....

You guys are right, stock NPI 96-99's are low 15 to high 14's, two of my buddies have them, one runs 14.9 and the other 15.10, both are STICKS. Remember guys, i have an AUTO, big difference. Also, as you know, location can have a huge difference on performance. we're at 1800FT here, and i don't know what the corrected altitude was when i raced, i do know the temp was close to 90 degrees.

I know my setup is pushing the correct HP, there are several calculators that can determine your at wheel and at fly HP by using your trap speed and vehicle weight. assuming a 25% drivetrain loss with the auto, that puts me at around 270 HP at the fly, 10 HP above a stock PI car.

The other reason I have to back the times, I have a couple other friends that own PI stangs, one is an '01 i believe and i know for sure the other is an '03. Both are sticks. Neither of those guys can beat me, both usually lose by around a carlength. To boot, one of them ran at the track recently, best ET of 14.95@91 MPH. that is a PI stick car at this location.

I'm sure the car is pushing the correct HP, I was DOMINATED by those guys before I did the swap, that's the whole reason I did it, because they said a '96 couldn't beat them.

here's some more food for thought, what are '96 camero's, LT1's or LS1's, don't know, but i do know that there were two at the track that night also, 14.5 is the fastest one of them had. I raced one and was only beat by maybe 1 or so. Those cars are easily low 14's, but not at this track.

Anyone else have any suggestions? Does anyone here ever race near or at Great Bend, KS?

The only reason i doubt that it's not running correctly is because i've raced two other PI cars and beat them, and the guys knew how to drive, they could slam the gears.

Here's another, i know another guy that has a '95 GT, convertable, auto trans, 3.73's and exhaust. best E.T. of 15.9@88MPH. the 5.0 is 225HP? so i'm about right on par i think.

Any thoughts? could something be wrong with all these cars?

Question, you ran 14.8 and you beat a 01 and a 03 gt. Just wondering what they were running? Guys here are running low 14s with stock 01-03. Something doesn't add up.

Prob is the altitude has something to do with it.

My track is close to sea level and the temps are usually cool and humidity minimal, so i'm used to seeing quicker times out of the cars you have described.

Everytime i go to the track i'm struggling to hit a 13.9 and barely missing with my stock PI GT, and at your track they are running high 14's? Most likely it has to be the altitude.

i see that also. I have read extensively about the PI swap here on stangnet before I did it. I talked to many people with auto's that had it, and all say mid to low 14's.

But I don't understand the guys I know that have PI cars, and the one I mentioned that did race, high 14's, that was the best he could pull. granted this was without slicks, just radials. but his 60' wasn't that bad, like a 2.2 or so. and although my other friend hasn't raced his at the track, we race on the street, and those two are almost even, and I can get both of them by about 1 through the 1/4.

Then there's the '95 Vert. gears and exhaust, auto. 15.9 i believe, best run.

one of my other friends also has a '95 GT, stick. 14.9 was his best E.T.
I had also mentioned that i know a guy with a NPI GT that ran high 14's, that was with slicks. without he was consistent 15.2's.

it has to be the altitude, i just looked it up, we're at 1900 FT here.

does anyone here know how to correct your E.T. to sea level? if so, let me know what info you need and i'll read it off my time slip. i'm sure the car is performing o.k. it's just the location.

I'm 200 pounds, so that would make my car about 3350, not as heavy as you would think. My car is fully optioned except for the Mach 1000 and Automatic, so that would add about 100 pounds for the automatic and 50 pounds for the mach 1000...give or take.

Ford uses a lot of composites on the 99+. The hood, trunk, side scoops, quarter pillars are composite and VERY light and the bumpers are urethane.

so it's pretty much about where it should be, remember this was also in the 90 degree heat, and my engine temp was 210 constant, i had the A/C on during the trip down the return road. I'm also told that the PI automatics had a higher stall speed? can anyone verify this? i'm still using the stock '96 converter. best '60 was 2.21.

Yeah, the PI's have the 4R70W with a better stall and i beleive wide-ratio gearing. I do know the 99+ Automatic is far better.

I have observed stock 99+ Automatics running as low as 14.2 at my local strip.
