Two years into the project and the car is finally off to paint.
The engine, 302 small block, 11.5:1 compression, overbored .030", has been removed, repainted, fitted with new Edelbrock water pump, Edelbrock RPM intake, edelbrock fuel pump and Canton oil pan. It has been dressed up with Ford Racing valve covers and chrome dipstick tube.
The transmission, driveshaft, front and rear windows, bumpers, badges, chrome trim, entire interior, headliner, gas tank, front and rear valances, and hood were removed.
The front valance has been replaced with a Shelby style glass fiber item from Branda.
The hood has been replaced with a Shelby style glass fiber on steel frame from NPD and the rear valance has been replaced with a steel GT style item also from NPD.
The paintwork is to be Ford Sonic Blue with Ford Performance White Shelby stripes. The badges will not be replaced, neither will the antenna, the holes being welded shut.
So far the autobody shop have removed the doors, fenders and front sheet metal. The doors and hood have been aligned. Body work repairs will be carried out this week and hopefully the car will be painted next week.
Thanks for helping me get this far guys.

How did the fiber glass parts fit? Do they have to be modified to fit right or are they quality enough that you dont have to? I was gonna go with a shelby valnce and hood but bagged the hood for mooney reasons and from reading that everyone has to do alot of work to fit them right. How was yours? I am really wondering about the front valance though.

Can't wait to see it done! Gonna look really nice in that sonic blue! congrats on making it this far!

I agree the paint is very shiny on the sides, but the AZ sun has baked the clear coat off all the upper surfaces, hood, roof and trunk. Also I can't abide the color.
Both the valance from Branda and the hood from NPD were good pieces. The valance took a bit of fitting and doesn't perfectly match the joint at the fenders, but this is a 40 year old car after all. I couldn't use the stock harware for the valance to gravel shield fit as there wasn't enough flat land under the screws so I went with socket head cap screws instead. Hood was a nice piece and fit really well. It has a steel frame.

Some early shots I received today of the new paint .
The main color is Ford Sonic Blue to which will be added Ford Performance White Shelby stripes. Gives the car a whole new attitude.
Can't wait to see it tomorrow morning.

Same thing happened to my wife's car. I think I'm gonna try and put a fresh clear coat on it this summer.

My stang's almost finished too. Just gotta redo the bumper, wash and reundercoat the unibody and then through the engine and tranny back together and slide um in. Then I'll be cruzin again after nearly 2 years. :nice:

Just wish I knew what to do about upgrading my stupid lap belts. Why didn't Ford solve that problem for me back in 73?

Krash,
The new Painless wiring harness and dual master cylinder installations are first on the list. I'm either going to have a crack (pun) at installing the glass myself or pay some installer to do it.
Tom,
Car was very straight to start with. The front valance was replaced by me with a Shelby style glass fiber item from Branda. The stock hood was replaced by me with a Shelby style glass fiber on steel frame from NPD and the rear valance was replaced with a steel GT style item also from NPD, also by me. I removed the engine, transmission, drive shaft, gas tank, interior, external chrome, bumpers, badges, mirrors and glass.
The autobody shop removed the doors, fenders and front sheet metal. They repaired a couple of rust holes with new metal. Stripped the paint to bare metal where necessary around the door jams and windows, realigned the doors and hood, primed where necessary, prepared the existing paint surface and painted it. I'm hoping the final bill comes in below $6500 excluding tax.
