I'm looking for a shop to deck my block and heads, and do some other work on the heads (ports, bowl work, valves). I looked on yellowpages.com for machine shops near Blacksburg and came up with nothing. Is there a registry of good automotive machine shops somewhere?

I've not seen one. I found the shop I use from local recommendations and then going over and talking to the manager. It is very informative to see the kind of work sent in to them. Is it just basic stuff, or are they handling some hi-perf work, too? That sort of thing.

You have several repair shops there on Main street, stop by a few and ask who they use and recommend. You can do the same in the neighboring towns. Good luck.

It's getting harder and harder to find a machine shop anymore.

Valve seals that last 200,000 miles, modern oils, roller cams, and EFI make 'em last a BUNCH longer and those folks just aren't around anymore.

or drive them. I use http://www.mmeracing.com in Southern Maryland. He has an amazing machine shop and builds top quality engines.

it will cost you about $60 to ship them.

Wow! I can't believe there's someone in my area that I haven't found. I've been looking for a performance shop in Southern Maryland for the past 2 years. Thanks for the post!! If I had known about them a little sooner, I'd have taken my engine to be dyno tuned before I put it back in the car. At least I know where to go for help in the future.

If you have a dragstrip nearby go there and ask those guys. They'll usually know who the best machinists are.
