like the subject line says im getting whine on deceleration. Its not super bad but bad enough. My final backlash setting was .008 and then I installed a .006 shim on both sides to preload carrier bearings. Ok Im wondering if the whine is there on decel because im at the low end of the spectrum in regards to backlash, or could it be inherent in the gears since they were used (purchased them on evilbay). on a good note the clunking I allways had is completely gone, but now the whine.any chance the whine may go away in a few hundred miles?

The rearend tech where I work said once they whine they'll always whine.... Mine does the samething but they were in the car when I bought it. It might have something to do with them being used.

the whine is most prevalent at around and 40 mph and slower, at 60 -80 I dont hear it at all .well does anybody think that if I re shim the carrier to achieve a little more backlash that the whine would stop?isnt whine on deceleration? a symptom of lash being too tight.

I had my 3.73s installed by a Ford tech (75 bucks incl. gaskets and oil, not bad!) and they have not whined at all - it could be improper shimming, or maybe its from the spider gears, NOT the ring/pinion at all. How did the diff look when you pulled it out?

As was mentioned before, once they whine, I think thats it, because they have now worn improperly and will always follow that path. You can try re-shimming, but either way, good luck!

Did you check the pattern? or just set the backlash?

If the gears are used they will typically wine, unless you can set them up exactly the way the were before, and that's not always possible because every rearend is a little different.

I've used used gears twice, simply because they are cheaper, and only the second time did I have a slight wine, But combined with the loud exhaust and locker it's not that noticeable so I really don't care. If the pattern looks good and the backlash is correct then don't worry about it, it won't break because it's wining.

New gears set up correctly should not wine though.

Did you remember to put the shim on the pinion gear when you pressed the bearing on it? I forgot that shim and they whined pretty bad on deceleration. So I took it all apart and put the shim back on it and it hasn't whined since.

yeah I used the shim that was on the 308s it was a 0.35 but a little off from heel to toe, however the yukon site had an illustration and my pattern according to them is acceptable.one of the write ups that I saw stated that the heel to toe mesh can be changed by backlash adjustments and root to top pattern is effected by pinion depth, however that doesnt seem to apply in my case cause I had that pattern when the lash was .013 and when I readjusted it to .008 it was still the same pattern, so Im thinking that to change the pattern from heel to toe I need to readjust the shim on the pinion .I didnt measure for pinion depth cause from what I gathered from popular opinion is that if you are installing ford gears you can get away with using the original shim or a new one of the same thickness.there is a company called raytech that sells a pinion depth setting tool for like 30 bucks. but for all I know the whine is inherent in my gears due to the fact that they were used.I may just leave it, because its not so bad being on deceleration, better that the whine being on accel.and maybe as some guys have said ,it may dissipate after a few hundred miles.I wonder if synthetic would quiet it up some?

I'll ask my bro-inlaw what he did. He's a ford tech, but he did it all in my garage by hand and feel, and there is 0 whine. But the gears were a 0 set to begin with...some go all the way to a -3 which sucks to install from what i he was saying. he said the new f-150's are coming in for ring and pinions like crazy so he can do it all by feel now.
