I have a '67 with a 289 in it. Just yesterday, I replaced my spark plug wires with new ones. With the new ones, it seems that my car runs very sluggish and idles very low. What could be the problem? firing order? bad wires? Does anyone have a diagram for the firing order on a 289??? I need visuals....

Prob' a stupid question but...

How do you know which connector on the distribtor cap is 1,2,3 etc? or does it not matter as long as you connect them in order clockwise?

(as you can tell i am very new to all this!!)

You have to make sure the engine is at Top Dead Center (TDC). Pull the distributor cap and look where the rotor is. This is the correct location for the #1 wire. Rotor spins counter clockwise so add the wires in the correct order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.

TDC is the top of the compression stroke. To find TDC, remove the passenger side valve cover and use a 11/16 socket to manually crank the engine. You can also use a remote starter to tap the engine over. Once you see the intake valve close, rotate the engine until the timing mark is at 0* (TDC).

It's been a while for me but that should do it.

HE has to be close or it wouldn't run, so he can just bring the timing mark up, it will either be at #1 or 180 degrees off.

Sorry i jumped the thread... SLEEPERstang21 has a different problem to me..

I am having trouble getting my 351w to start... think i may have the wiring wrong... its also got a 302 cam so i guess i should be using the firing order from a 302 not a 351?

that's possible the cams are interchangable.
