Just did my first change over the weekend at 1000 miles. Went to Mobil 1 0w20. Royb is right, the filter is on VERY tight, and it appears that the gasket wasn't lubed. Had to drive a screw driver through it to get it off.
I cleaned the oil plug, and didn't notice any big metal pieces, but the oil was pretty dirty for only 1000 miles.
Here's my plan: 1000 miles the first change and switch to full synthetic, 4000 additional miles for the second change (to 5000 total vehicle miles), and 5000 thereafter - continuing with Mobil 1 oil. This is my every-day car, and I do mostly highway driving, so nothing too tough or dusty. I think I'll probably cover those 5000 miles in roughly 3 months.
I change my cobra's oil every 1000 - 1500 miles (once a year) and the '04 escape gets 3000 mile changes (has to deal with towing & daily driving).
